Leon McBeth is best known as a Southern Baptist Church historian and primarily for his book, The Baptist Heritage (Broadman, 1987). In 1990 Broadman Press printed this follow-up to that book. McBeth explains in the preface, “Over the years when I would share an unusual anecdote, a choice quotation, or a first-hand account of some […]

The Protestant Revolution
I found this 1914 volume of a 30-volume set of historical essays done by many prominent educators. What I found most interesting in this university text was the overriding confidence of the authors and endorsers that the Protestant Reformation was one of the most positive influences in the history of the world. The result it […]
The Royal Mile and New Town
Travel back in time to bygone Edinburgh We picked up this book on our last Baptist History tour to Scotland. It is amazing to realize the difficulties that men like John Knox had to deal with in the sixteenth century, or Robert and James Haldane in the eighteenth century, or even the Moody and Sankey […]
A History of Spurgeon’s Tabernacle
A few weeks ago I ordered a very nice reprint of Spurgeon’s autobiography from Pilgrim Publications, Pasadena, CA. Along with the 4-volume set they included a copy of this book by Eric Hayden, pastor of Metropolitan Tabernacle from 1956 until 1962. We attended Metropolitan a couple of weeks ago on our Baptist History tour. The […]
The Story of the Reformation
This book on the Reformation, including Scotland, is much more satisfying because Stevenson is a Presbyterian, the national religion of Scotland. Stevenson’s chapter on Anabaptists is one of the most complimentary that I have read from a non-Baptist. The accounts of their sufferings at the hands of Catholics, Protestants, and the secular authorities is specific […]
A History of Scotland
This secular book on the history of Scotland gives an interesting perspective to a country that largely has a religious history and government. Even John Knox only receives passing notice and the national covenant becomes only an interesting religious phenomenon. I suppose it is instructive to see how secular writers see history.
Great Tales from English History 2 & 3
My interest in English history is fueled by our Baptist History tours in the United Kingdom, and also by a growing acquaintance with the tragic decline of Christianity in the country of our heritage. These two volumes are the middle two of four but they cover the periods of history that greatly affect our Baptist […]
The Reformation of the Sixteenth Century
I am always happy to find a jewel in a used book store. This 1952 Beacon Press book was the best dollar spent yet this year! In its short 260 pages, Bainton gives excellent comparisons of Lutheran, Reformed, and Anabaptist histories as well as differences in their beliefs. The chapter on Anabaptism (“The Church Withdrawn: […]
Victorian London 1840-1870
This is one of those Borders books that I picked up as background for our Discovering Baptist History Tours. A quick look at the index showed that it included Spurgeon as the most noted London preacher of these years. Learning more about the city in which Spurgeon preached is always enjoyable and profitable for me.
England in Picture, Song, and Story
I found this original edition of the 1936 D. Appleton-Century Company in an antique store! The 400 page book also has over 400 pictures and illustrations of England, mostly from the time of Reformation to the 20th century. Since I’m always looking for pictures and explanations of places we visit on our study trips, this […]
