Helen of the Old House

Of the nineteen HBW books, this title was the biggest deterrent to reading the book.  But since it was the next one, I read it.  But low and behold it turned out to be one of the best.  It is about market economy versus unionism; capitalism versus socialism.  And this written in 1921!  What Wright […]

Liberty and Tyranny

I’m not one to recommend books from radio personalities but I couldn’t refuse this one.  I read it and would recommend it to others who, like myself, need a refresher course in constitutional law and the founding documents of our country.  The contrast between what our founding fathers believed and what we are hearing today […]

A History of Scotland

This secular book on the history of Scotland gives an interesting perspective to a country that largely has a religious history and government.  Even John Knox only receives passing notice and the national covenant becomes only an interesting religious phenomenon.  I suppose it is instructive to see how secular writers see history.

Great Tales from English History 2 & 3

My interest in English history is fueled by our Baptist History tours in the United Kingdom, and also by a growing acquaintance with the tragic decline of Christianity in the country of our heritage.  These two volumes are the middle two of four but they cover the periods of history that greatly affect our Baptist […]

A Short History of England

I was delighted to find this 1918 edition on a lonely flea market shelf for just a couple bucks.  I know you have to have a reason to read these kinds of books but I happened to have one.  I was “delighted” because I have found more detailed and specific information than I have in […]

The Real Change

In the end times the apostasy of the age will creep into God’s church, sometimes in the form of blatant unbelief, but also in a coldness toward the things of God and a love for the things of the world.  While the world takes its downward spiral toward the coming judgment of God, the church […]

Why Do Christians Vote?

The Bible says that believers are pilgrims and strangers on the earth and that we have no certain dwelling place here.  As normal human beings we are citizens of many countries, speakers of many languages, and partakers of many cultures.  Yet as Christians we are only visitors here, ambassadors for a more noble country, pilgrims […]

Scotland’s Battles for Spiritual Indepen

This history of the Church of Scotland includes John Knox’s battle for independence from Rome and his part in the  Reformation; the Covenanters who established an independent General Assembly within Presbyterianism; and the Evangelical revival of the Haldane brothers in Edinburgh, as well as Thomas McCrie and Thomas Chalmers.  The Presbyterian Church of Scotland still […]

Thomas Jefferson and the Wall of Separat...

Every Christian ought to read this book and be familiar with its arguments in light of the anti-Christian “separation of church and state” culture in our courts, many of them declaring any form of public Christianity unconstitutional. We have priceless religious freedom guaranteed in our Constitution, guarantees we are losing in the courts. In exploring […]

The Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire

*Two texts were used: an unabridged (six volumes) where detail was desired and an abridged text by D. M. Low for context reading. The parallels found in the early history of the ancient republic of the Roman Empire to that of the United States today are remarkable. Author Gibbon spent the majority of his life […]
