Tozer on Worship and Entertainment

This is a compilation of works and messages by Tozer printed by Christian Publications in 1997. The editors call this side of Tozer a “cherry bomb” when applied to today’s church, and I agree. Nevertheless, they say, Tozer needs to “have his say,” and I agree. “It is scarcely possible in most places,” says Tozer, […]

J. Frank Norris and His Heirs

This is a 1999 book which traces the attitude toward Bible translations by fundamental Baptist groups that have roots to Norris. Kutilek does a good job of showing that the KJV Only position did not originate with Norris nor with his heirs until about the mid-1970s. The book is well written and thoroughly footnoted.

A Handbook of Contemporary Theology

Dr. Smith, a Southern Baptist seminary professor and former pastor, wrote this book as a textbook for his course on contemporary theology. It was a necessity as there were few, if any, texts available on the subject. As he notes in the Preface, “Contemporary does not last a very long time.” Overall, it is an […]

Countdown to Armageddon

This book has two general editors, Joe Jordan and Tim Davis. It is a compilation of 21 articles on prophecy beginning with Daniel’s visions of the Roman Empire and going through The Great White Throne Judgment. Contributors include John Walvoord, Charles U. Wagner, Thomas D. Ice, J. Dwight Pentecost, Charles Ryrie, Elwood McQuaid and others. […]

The God Who Is There

IVP has done a 30th anniversary edition of this classic apologetic. I reread the book to search for things I had forgotten and found it to be as fresh as if Schaeffer had written it this year. What he continually calls “the new theology” (in 1968) is exactly what we are seeing as accepted theology […]

Christianity and Culture

My mother, a former public high school English teacher, had this book on a shelf since she retired. The last time I was home I decided to put it back into circulation. It was well worth it! I have not read Eliot with any consistency but found him to be one of those sagacious, forward-looking […]

Dismissing God

Lockerbie is a British author and literary critic. In this book he shows how the British and American authors over the last two hundred years have dismissed God from the accepted literary circles. It is interesting to read how people such as Emily Dickinson, Mark Twain, Ralph Waldo Emerson, and others ended their search for […]

Relativism

This is a new book that explores the way in which today’s generation thinks about right and wrong. In one part, the authors state, “But if relativists are consistent, there’s another problem: Those who deny all morality are twisted and a threat to society. On their view, the worst that could be said of Charles […]

Facing Millennial Midnight

There are now a number of books dealing with the Y2K problem. I received this book as a gift and was familiar with Hal Lindsey. The book paints a pretty gloom picture of January 1, 2000. He could have titled it, “The Late Great Planet Earth II.” There is no doubt that much of this […]

The God of the Bible and Other Gods

Lightner is not a stranger to apologetic books. This is a 1998 writing which validates the Christian faith against other contemporary views. It reads like a refresher course on the major doctrines and I think would be a good book to start a new believer out on. It includes a section, along with helpful charts, […]
