Take heed of being offended at the cross that thou must go by before thou come to heaven.\u00a0 You must understand that there is no man that goeth to heaven but he must go by the cross.\u00a0 The cross is the standing way-mark by which all they that go to glory must pass.<\/span><\/p>\n

John Bunyan, \u201cThe Heavenly Footman\u201d1<\/sup><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u00a0What have we learned from the passion of our Lord Jesus Christ at this Easter season?\u00a0 Learning that He died is history.\u00a0 Learning that He died for me is the gospel!\u00a0 Luther\u2019s famous statement was, \u201cLiving, or rather dying and being damned make a theologian, not understanding, reading or speculating.\u201d2<\/sup> That is, it takes the actual dying with Jesus through our repentance and faith in order to experience the new life that comes through His resurrection.\u00a0 We may know all about it, as those standing around the cross, without ever experiencing it.<\/p>\n

If there is any such thing as a false believer, then there are those who speak of Christ\u2019s death and resurrection but have never known it.\u00a0 John Armstrong wrote, \u201cTo preach evangelically is, by definition, to preach the doctrine of the cross in its full theological sense.\u00a0 This means that preaching on marriage, family or finance without the word of the cross at the center is a new form of legalism.\u00a0 It is a modern moralism without Christ and the cross.\u00a0 It is not, fundamentally, evangelical.\u201d3<\/sup> And neither is it the solution to our problems.<\/p>\n

In the cloudy teaching on reconciliation today, we seem to ignore, or at least forget, that in Jesus\u2019 death \u201cif one died for all, then all <\/em> died\u201d (2 Cor 5:14).\u00a0 In His death \u201cGod was in Christ reconciling the world <\/em>unto himself\u201d (vs 19).\u00a0 When Paul tells us that he was crucified with Christ (Gal 2:20), he is telling us that he came to the end of himself completely, dying to Jesus on His cross.\u00a0 Jesus\u2019 death made that faith possible for anyone who will also come to his own end.<\/p>\n

This dying to ourselves so that we can be reconciled to God is, of course, repentance.\u00a0 Our repentance is our identification with Christ\u2019s own humiliation on the cross.\u00a0 McGrath says, \u201cBefore a man can be justified, he must be utterly humiliated\u2014and it is God who both humiliates and justifies.\u201d4<\/sup> Luther put it this way, \u201cLet us see how this works out, and see how it benefits us.\u00a0 Christ is full of grace, life and salvation.\u00a0 The human soul is full of sin, death and damnation.\u00a0 Now let faith come between them.\u00a0 Sin, death and damnation will be Christ\u2019s, and grace, life and salvation will be the believer\u2019s.\u201d5<\/sup><\/p>\n

Now if Jesus only died but did not resurrect from the dead, we might have death with Him but we would have no life with Him.\u00a0 We could become good at self-crucifixion but it would amount only to dead works.\u00a0 In the great reconciliation chapter, Paul continues, \u201cAnd that he died for all, that they which live should not henceforth live unto themselves, but unto him which died for them, and rose again\u201d (2 Cor 5:15).<\/p>\n

Having died to our own ability to save ourselves, and having understood that Jesus has the power to bring life back from the dead, we cast ourselves upon Him in faith and find resurrection life!\u00a0 \u201cFor though he was crucified through weakness, yet he liveth by the power of God.\u00a0 For we also are weak in him, but we shall live with him by the power of God toward you\u201d (2 Cor 13:4).<\/p>\n

Now we understand why the way up is down, the way of life is death, the way of power is weakness! The true meaning of life and the solution to our troubles is in the dying so that we can live.\u00a0 So we can continue with Paul, \u201cand the life that I now live in the flesh, I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me\u201d (Gal 2:20).<\/p>\n

Of course, we must understand the pitfalls.\u00a0 There is an offense to the cross.\u00a0 The sinful self does not want to be crucified because it is its nature to exalt itself.\u00a0 In Galatia, Paul met these people as Judaizers who hung on to at least some <\/em>prideful work of the flesh in circumcision.\u00a0 But Paul said, if you hang on to any work, so that it is mostly <\/em>of Christ and partly <\/em>of you, \u201cthen is the offense of the cross ceased\u201d (Gal 5:11).\u00a0 That is, your pride in your work has kept you from being embarrassed by a total repentance and identification with His crucifixion.\u00a0 No!, \u201cGod forbid that I should glory, save in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom the world is crucified unto me, and I unto the world\u201d (6:14).<\/p>\n

There are those who would love to have the resurrection life of Christ but are not willing to be crucified with Christ.\u00a0 The humility of the cross becomes too high of a price to pay.\u00a0 Easter morning is fine with them but don\u2019t remind them of crucifixion afternoon!\u00a0 What a wrong thing it is to place such a person under the baptismal waters who has never been crucified with Christ!\u00a0 You can\u2019t be raised up out of the water until you\u2019ve been buried underneath it.<\/p>\n

Perhaps true believers can make the error of emphasizing either the death or the resurrection of Christ to exclusion.\u00a0 There have been extreme errors of flagellations and self-scourgings in an attempt to punish the flesh.\u00a0 But as Christians we may also emphasize the denial of ourselves without the joy of new life in Christ.\u00a0 We like it in the grave too much.\u00a0 We may actually feed on a martyr complex which becomes a prideful thing in itself.<\/p>\n

On the other hand we may think we can have the new life without the death of the old one.\u00a0 \u201cAll things are lawful unto me\u201d the Corinthian cry became.\u00a0 Yet Paul was well aware that he was \u201cunder the law of Christ.\u201d\u00a0 Paul knew he had to \u201cbeat his body and keep it under subjection\u201d lest he become disqualified in the race.\u00a0 It is much better for the believer to realize, \u201cI am crucified with Christ nevertheless I live.\u201d<\/p>\n

Charles Wesley was amazed at the miracle of the new birth when he wrote \u201cAnd can it be that I should gain.\u201d\u00a0 A forgotten verse of that old hymn goes:<\/p>\n

Long my imprisoned spirit lay<\/p>\n

Fast bound in sin and nature\u2019s night;<\/p>\n

Thine eye diffused a quickening ray,\u2014<\/p>\n

I woke, the dungeon flamed with light;<\/p>\n

My chains fell off, my heart was free,<\/p>\n

I rose, went forth, and followed thee.<\/p>\n
