I had been right in feeling all things as odd, for I myself was at once worse and better than all things.\u00a0 The optimist\u2019s pleasure was prosaic, for it dwelt on the naturalness of everything; the Christian pleasure was poetic, for it dwelt on the unnaturalness of everything in the light of the supernatural.\u00a0 The modern philosopher had told me again and again that I was in the right place, and I had still felt depressed even in acquiescence.\u00a0 But I had heard that I was in the <\/span><em style=\"font-size: 16px; text-align: justify;\">wrong <\/em><span style=\"font-size: 16px; text-align: justify; font-style: italic;\">place, and my soul sang for joy, like a bird in spring.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">G.K. Chesterton<sup>1<\/sup><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">There is nothing we seem to enjoy more than popularizing an old word.\u00a0 Emerson said, \u201cEvery word was once a poem . . . Language is fossil poetry.\u201d<sup>2<\/sup> I remember when \u201cscenario\u201d was the only interesting thing about an opera and a \u201cdisorder\u201d was a command to break it up.\u00a0 But of all the reborn words going around today, I like \u201coxymoron\u201d the best.\u00a0 <em>Oxys <\/em>means \u201csharp, or keen\u201d and <em>moros <\/em>means \u201cfoolish\u2014more at moron.\u201d\u00a0 It is a combination of sharply contradictory or foolish terms.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Have you ever seen a \u201ccivil war?\u201d\u00a0 I doubt if there is such a thing. Can it really be ended by a \u201cpeace offensive?\u201d\u00a0 How about \u201cold news?\u201d Isn\u2019t all information old when we get it?\u00a0 Did you ever tell someone they were \u201cpretty ugly?\u201d\u00a0 Well, they can take it any way they want I suppose.\u00a0 Until I gained some weight I didn\u2019t know what \u201ctight slacks\u201d meant.\u00a0 I don\u2019t think I want to find out why there are \u201cdeath benefits.\u201d\u00a0 This is not to mention such oxymora as \u201ceven odds,\u201d \u201cawfully good,\u201d \u201cloyal opposition,\u201d \u201cconspicuously absent,\u201d \u201cbenevolent despot,\u201d \u201cwar games,\u201d \u201celevated subway,\u201d and the \u201cliving end.\u201d\u00a0 Now I am not sure about tongue-in-cheek oxymora such as \u201cmilitary intelligence,\u201d \u201cpostal service\u201d and \u201cnon-working mothers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">This renewed dialectical interest ought to remind us that Christianity itself is an oxymoron.\u00a0 From childhood we learn from the Scripture that that the way up is down, power comes through weakness, greatness is in humility and the first shall be last.\u00a0 It is all too possible that we have learned these truths with the same \u201cmindless thinking\u201d with which we use our native tongue.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Consider these Biblical oxymora:\u00a0 \u201cBut and if ye <em>suffer <\/em>for righteousness sake, <em>happy <\/em>are ye\u201d (1 Peter 3:14); \u201c<em>Serve <\/em>the LORD with <em>fear<\/em>, and <em>rejoice <\/em>with <em>trembling<\/em>\u201d (Psa 2:11); \u201cWho is the <em>image <\/em>of the <em>invisible <\/em>God\u201d (Col 1:15); \u201cAnd to <em>know <\/em> the love of Christ, which <em>passeth knowledge<\/em>\u201d (Eph 3:19); \u201cFor ye are <em> dead<\/em>, and your <em>life <\/em>is hid with Christ in God\u201d (Col 3:3); \u201chaving received the word in much <em>affliction<\/em>, with <em>joy <\/em>of the Holy Ghost\u201d (1 Thes 1:6); \u201cand have washed their robes, and made them <em>white <\/em>in the <em> blood <\/em>of the Lamb\u201d (Rev 7:14); \u201cThese both were cast <em>alive <\/em>into a lake of <em>fire <\/em>burning with brimstone\u201d (Rev 19:20).\u00a0 I think that the central oxymoron of the Bible is \u201cAnd this is his <em>commandment<\/em>, that we should <em>believe <\/em>on the name of his Son Jesus Christ\u201d (1 John 3:23).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">I have found the book of Hebrews to contain more than its share of these apparent contradictions.\u00a0 \u201cLet us <em>labour <\/em>therefore to enter into that <em>rest<\/em>\u201d (4:11); \u201c<em>Without father <\/em>. . . but made like unto the <em> Son <\/em>of God\u201d (7:3);\u00a0 \u201cfor he endured, as <em>seeing <\/em>him who is <em> invisible<\/em>\u201d (11:27); \u201cand let us <em>run <\/em>with <em>patience <\/em>the race that is set before us\u201d (12:1).\u00a0 Of course, the writer of Hebrews presents us with the most apparent statement of all, \u201cNow <em>faith <\/em>is the <em>substance <\/em>of things hoped for, the <em>evidence <\/em>of <em>things not seen<\/em>\u201d (11:1).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">My favorite oxymoron in Hebrews is an extended one in chapter 12 that illustrates chapter 11.\u00a0 We learned in chapter 11 that faith endures present and real affliction for the sake of unseen realities.\u00a0 Yet, \u201cthese all, having obtained a good report through faith, received not the promise\u201d (11:39).\u00a0 After seventeen verses in chapter 12 in which the author admonishes us to look to Jesus (\u201clooking\u201d at someone who is not visible to us) and remain faithful in chastisement, we are given a most amazing word picture.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Verse 18 begins with, \u201cFor ye are not come unto the mount that might be touched\u201d and verse 22 begins with, \u201cBut ye are come unto mount Sion.\u201d\u00a0 Now the fact is that those Jewish readers could travel to the Sinai and touch that old mountain if they wanted.\u00a0 Their forefathers stood there long before and trembled at the sight and sound of God\u2019s power.\u00a0 Yet, for all the advantage of the greatest multi-media presentation known in history, those people could not translate the visible to the invisible and believe.\u00a0 The writer of Hebrews was telling his first century readers that they must stay in the assembly of true believers and not return to the visible temple with all of its pomp and ceremony, smells and sounds, beauty and ornament.\u00a0 The true worship of God is to see the unseen.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The true believer is now come to a real mount that has not yet been established, \u201cunto the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, and to an innumerable company of angels, to the general assembly and church of the firstborn, which are written in heaven, and to God the Judge of all, and to the spirits of just men made perfect, and to Jesus the mediator of the new covenant and to the blood of sprinkling, that speaketh better things than that of Abel\u201d (12:22-24).\u00a0 Those Jewish believers had a better reality than Sinai or Herod\u2019s temple, they had faith in these \u201cthings not seen,\u201d in a \u201ccloud of witnesses\u201d that they do not see.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Oxymora are not real contradictions but only apparent.\u00a0 Once they are explained, the initial misunderstanding disappears.\u00a0 That \u201cpeace offensive\u201d is seen for what it really is, a \u201cpeace initiative.\u201d\u00a0 We are commissioned by God to take the explanation of the reality of faith to a world that sees only with their natural senses.\u00a0 We ask them to see the unseen, to rest in work already done, to prepare for a world to which they cannot travel.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">A.W. Tozer wrote, \u201cThe modern scientist has lost God amid the wonders of His world;\u00a0 we Christians are in real danger of losing God amid the wonders of His Word.\u201d<sup>3<\/sup> May we ever see what we cannot see, but by the eyes of faith.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<address style=\"text-align: justify;\">Notes:<\/address>\n<address style=\"text-align: justify;\">1.
