Ashamed Of The Gospel<\/strong><\/h1>\n

What the world expects of Christians is that Christians should speak \t\t\tout, loud and clear, in such a way that never a doubt, never the \t\t\tslightest doubt, could rise in the heart of the simplest man.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

The above quote from a well-known unbeliever is an amazing \t\tadmission of the desire within lost people to hear the gospel message \t\tclearly and unashamedly from believers.  Blaise Pascal wrote:<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

There are only three sorts of people: those who have found God \t\tand serve him; those who are busy seeking him and have not found him; \t\tthose who live without either seeking or finding him.  The first are \t\treasonable and happy, the last are foolish and unhappy, those in the \t\tmiddle are unhappy and reasonable.2<\/sup><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

Whether a sinner is foolish or reasonable, he needs to hear \t\tthe gospel presented so that the Holy Spirit can do His work.  Most \t\tChristians would agree that nothing is as important in this life as \t\thearing or giving the gospel.  Then why don\u2019t we do it more?  Why don\u2019t \t\twe simply speak the words of faith in a sinner\u2019s presence so that he is \t\tconfronted with the claims of Christ?  Now, I am not minimizing \t\t\u201cpre-evangelism\u201d or simply being wise enough not to turn people off \t\tbefore we get a chance to turn them on.  But I am proposing that we \t\toften fail to speak the gospel, even after much time has been spent \t\tpreparing the soil, and there may be a very telling reason.  John \t\tMacArthur says, \u201cWe try to live our testimony rather than speak it.  But \t\tno one ever got to heaven just because someone lived his testimony in \t\tfront of him.  Sooner or later you\u2019ve got to give them the words of the \t\tgospel.\u201d3<\/sup><\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

When the Apostle Paul wrote, \u201cFor I am not ashamed of the \t\tgospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to everyone \t\tthat believeth\u201d (Rom 1:16), he was not merely being emotional, but was \t\texpressing an issue that is at the very heart of evangelism.  That issue \t\tis: Do we see God and eternity clearly enough to care about that more \t\tthan we care about what people think of us?  A \u201cyes\u201d answer would mean \t\tthat we have a strong biblical faith.  A \u201cno\u201d answer would mean, in \t\tbiblical terms, that we are ashamed of things that cannot be seen when \t\tplaced at the scrutiny of people we can see.  To the Apostle, however, \t\tthis would be like a doctor refusing to treat an emergency patient \t\tbecause he screams about the pain.<\/p>\n

The writer of the book of Hebrews tells us that Jesus \t\t\u201cendured the cross, despising the shame\u201d (Heb 12:2).  Despite how the \t\tlife of Christ and His passion are stretched for principles by everyone \t\tfrom money manipulators to  management moguls, the person and work of \t\tour Savior was rejected by the Jewish nation and by Gentiles throughout \t\tthe known world.  Paul himself says, \u201cBut we preach Christ crucified, \t\tunto the Jews a stumblingblock, and unto the Greeks foolishness\u201d (1 Cor \t\t1:23).<\/p>\n

The Apostles were men specifically chosen by Christ to be \t\twitnesses of His resurrection at a time when that was a very unpopular \t\tand even dangerous message.  We ought to notice again how often the \t\twords \u201cboldness,\u201d \u201cpower\u201d and \u201cunashamed\u201d appear in the early chapters \t\tof Acts.  After the Apostles were imprisoned and instructed not to speak \t\tagain of this resurrection, God told them to \u201cGo, stand and speak in the \t\ttemple to the people all the words of this life\u201d (Acts 5:20).  When they \t\twere arrested again, beaten and released, \u201cthey departed from the \t\tpresence of the council, rejoicing that they were counted worthy to \t\tsuffer shame for his name\u201d (vs 41).<\/p>\n

Peter later wrote that we are to be happy when we speak the \t\tgospel and are accused of being \u201cevildoers\u201d (1 Peter 2:12) by those who \t\tdo not believe.  \u201cHappy are ye,\u201d Peter says, \u201cand be not afraid of their \t\tterror, neither be troubled\u201d (3:14);  \u201cWherein they think it strange \t\tthat ye run not with them to the same excess of riot, speaking evil of \t\tyou\u201d (4:4); \u201cBut rejoice, inasmuch as ye are partakers of Christ\u2019s \t\tsufferings\u201d (4:13).<\/p>\n

Paul asked the Roman Christians, \u201cWhat fruit had ye then in \t\tthose things whereof ye are now ashamed? for the end of those things is \t\tdeath.  But now being made free from sin, and become servants to God, ye \t\thave your fruit unto holiness, and the end everlasting life\u201d (Rom \t\t6:21-22).  Paul makes it clear, to love Christ is to be ashamed of the \t\tworld and to love the world is to be ashamed of Christ.  It is the \t\tmessage of the cross for which we must not be ashamed.  John Bunyan once \t\twarned, \u201cTake heed of being offended at the cross that thou must go by \t\tbefore thou come to heaven.  You must understand that there is no man \t\tthat goeth to heaven but he must go by the cross.  The cross is the \t\tstanding way-mark by which all they that go to glory must pass.\u201d4<\/sup><\/p>\n

In C.S. Lewis\u2019 The Screwtape Letters<\/em>, master-demon \t\tScrewtape is instructing his pupil-demon Wormwood on how to keep a \t\tChristian (his \u201cpatient\u201d) from being a witness.  He says:<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

No doubt he must very soon realise that his own faith is in \t\tdirect opposition to the assumptions on which all the conversation of \t\this new friends is based.  I don\u2019t think that matters much, provided \t\tthat you can persuade him to postpone any open acknowledgment of the \t\tfact, and this, with the aid of shame, pride, modesty, and vanity, will \t\tbe easy to do.  As long as the postponement lasts he will be in a false \t\tposition.  He will be silent when he ought to speak and laugh when he \t\tought to be silent.  He will assume, at first by his manner, but \t\tpresently by his words, all sorts of cynical and sceptical attitudes \t\twhich are not really his.  But if you play him well, they may become \t\this.  All sorts tend to turn into the thing they are pretending to be.  \t\tThis is elementary.5<\/sup><\/p>\n

The extent to which we realize that such a conflict \t\texists between two worlds is the extent to which we will be unashamed of \t\tthe gospel.  We may even welcome the antipathy, as Paul wrote, \u201cBe not \t\tthou therefore ashamed of the testimony of our Lord, nor of me his \t\tprisoner: but be thou partaker of the afflictions of the gospel \t\taccording to the power of God\u201d (2 Tim 1:8).<\/p>\n
