{"id":1069,"date":"1998-08-27T02:43:24","date_gmt":"1998-08-27T02:43:24","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/aletheiabaptistministries.org\/Blog\/august-qidolatry-and-conscienceq\/"},"modified":"2014-01-31T20:39:23","modified_gmt":"2014-01-31T20:39:23","slug":"august-qidolatry-and-conscienceq","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/aletheiabaptistministries.org\/Blog\/august-qidolatry-and-conscienceq\/","title":{"rendered":"Idolatry and Conscience"},"content":{"rendered":"<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; font-style: italic;\">\u201cIn this connection it is not claimed that an unsaved person must come to know every phase of truth about the atonement of Christ before he is divinely prepared for salvation; but it is claimed that the Spirit proposes to make the meaning of the cross sufficiently clear to that person as to enable him to abandon all hope of self-works, and to turn to the finished work of Christ alone in intelligent, saving faith.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>L. S. Chafer<sup>1<\/sup><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Whereas in 1 Corinthians 8, Paul deals with how weaker and stronger brothers should guard against offense, in chapter 10 the Apostle has a different picture in mind.\u00a0 What does the Christian do with his liberty when a lost person\u2019s soul is hanging in the balance?\u00a0 Whose conscience is more important and for what reason?\u00a0 Aren\u2019t the stakes quite a bit higher?<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In a day when the average citizen cares little for manners and deportment and is concerned above all else with protecting his own space, it is easy for God\u2019s people to also be more concerned with their personal rights than with the effectiveness of the gospel.\u00a0 But Paul writes, \u201cConscience, I say, not thine own, but of the other\u201d (vs 29).\u00a0 He then ends the chapter by writing, \u201cnot seeking mine own profit, but the profit of many, that they may be saved\u201d (vs 33).\u00a0 The salvation of the lost person depends much on how the believer allows the conscience of the unbeliever to be affected by his words and actions (see 2 Cor 4:2).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Before Paul gets to his story of the believer having dinner with an unbeliever, he places it in the context of idolatry.\u00a0 We are to flee idolatry because we have the sad examples of the Israelites\u2019 repeated failures (vss 1-10).\u00a0 We should not think that we are so enlightened that we could not fall into this insidious sin (vss 11-14).\u00a0 In the next few verses Paul makes an interesting point that I think could be stated like this:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Our indulgent action around other people\u2019s actions attaches us to the beliefs of that group. <\/strong> This is an integral part of idolatry and why otherwise innocent action like eating, bowing, clapping, etc, becomes part and parcel to the sin.\u00a0 Three obvious examples are given.\u00a0 The first is the observance of the Lord\u2019s Supper (vss 16-17).\u00a0 Believers show their unity of belief and their communion with their God through this common action of eating and drinking.\u00a0 The second is the sacrificial system of Israel (vs 18).\u00a0 The entire nation was, in reality, \u201cpartakers of the altar\u201d because they all participated to some small degree, although the priest was the primary participant.\u00a0 The third example is the pagan idolatry often seen in Corinth itself (vss 19-21).\u00a0 Participation in the sacrifice to sticks and stones was in reality to \u201chave fellowship with devils.\u201d\u00a0 Strong warning is given to any who would attempt to participate in the Lord\u2019s Table as well as the tables of demons.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">After Paul answers the questions of selfish believers (\u201caren\u2019t all things lawful unto me?\u201d) he advances to the hypothetical story and makes, I think, this point:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>The actions and beliefs of a pagan group make otherwise innocent action pagan to them.<\/strong> Here is a believer who is invited to dinner by an unbeliever.\u00a0 They go to a \u201cfeast\u201d where there is a real mixed multitude of people as well as appetites.\u00a0 The believer knows that some of the meat being sold and eaten was sacrificial meat, but his conscience is clear and no connection is held in his own mind.\u00a0 He is right, if that were the end of it.\u00a0 But out of the blue his host says, \u201cThis is offered in sacrifice to idols.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; padding-left: 30px;\"><em>Note:\u00a0 I must inform you that many commentators take both of these men to be believers but I do not.\u00a0 I agree with G.C. Morgan and also F.W. Grosheide who says, \u201cA pagan might say this to a Christian to warn him . . . he might also do it to embarrass the Christian and to see what he would do.\u201d<sup>2<\/sup><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Immediately the believer is to stop eating.\u00a0 The unbeliever has now attached his belief system to the meat.\u00a0 \u201cThis is pretty good stuff, huh?\u00a0 It was sacrificed to my god today.\u201d\u00a0 It would be easy at this point to go on without saying anything, as when a Christian laughs at someone\u2019s ugly joke.\u00a0 But that would bother the believer\u2019s conscience, though it would not affect the unbeliever\u2019s. \u00a0Instead, the believer is to purposely awake the unbeliever\u2019s conscience and make him think about what he is doing.\u00a0 He does this by abstaining, and by doing so, refuses to participate in his idolatry with him.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In Paul\u2019s concluding remarks, I think he reinforces this principle:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>A believer places himself in jeopardy willingly for the spiritual profit of an unbeliever<\/strong>.\u00a0 The jeopardy in which Paul has placed himself is potential ridicule.\u00a0 He asks, \u201cFor if I by grace be a partaker, why am I evil spoken of for that for which I give thanks?\u201d (vs 30).\u00a0 Why indeed!\u00a0 His own answer is for the sake of the unbeliever, \u201cthat he might be saved\u201d (vs 33).\u00a0 Calvin wrote, \u201cWhat is opposed to their salvation ought not to be conceded to them.\u201d<sup>3<\/sup> They will thank us for eternity.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">We often quote vs 31, \u201cWhether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God.\u201d\u00a0 Perhaps by \u201ceat\u201d and \u201cdrink\u201d Paul had in mind the Lord\u2019s Table as opposed to the demon\u2019s table.\u00a0 If we <em>do <\/em>eat of the Lord\u2019s Table, we can only bring glory to Him by <em>not <\/em>eating of the demon\u2019s table.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">J. G. Machen once wrote,\u00a0 \u201cThe worst sin today is to say that you agree with the Christian faith and believe in the Bible but then make common cause with those who deny the basic facts of Christianity.\u201d<sup>4<\/sup> One of Spurgeon\u2019s famous sayings was,\u00a0 \u201cFellowship with known and vital error is participation in sin.\u201d<sup>5<\/sup> The issue revolves around idolatry and conscience.\u00a0 Are we going to participate in idolatry and suffer from our own conscience?\u00a0 Or are we willing to abstain and receive the abuse from the unbeliever\u2019s pierced conscience? Is this not what Paul meant when he admonished, \u201ccommending ourselves to every man\u2019s conscience in the sight of God.\u00a0 But if our gospel be hid, it is hid to them that are lost\u201d (2 Cor 4:2-3)?<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">May God give us the grace to submit ourselves to the scrutiny of the lost, \u201cthat they may be saved.&#8221;<\/p>\n<address style=\"text-align: justify;\">Notes:<\/address>\n<address style=\"text-align: justify;\">1.
