{"id":1068,"date":"1998-09-27T02:42:27","date_gmt":"1998-09-27T02:42:27","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/aletheiabaptistministries.org\/Blog\/september-qpolling-for-moral-authorityq\/"},"modified":"2014-02-02T08:08:49","modified_gmt":"2014-02-02T08:08:49","slug":"september-qpolling-for-moral-authorityq","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/aletheiabaptistministries.org\/Blog\/september-qpolling-for-moral-authorityq\/","title":{"rendered":"Polling For Moral Authority"},"content":{"rendered":"<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">Yet, within the Church as well as outside it, this perverted notion persists.\u00a0 Truth is conceived on a quantitative basis\u2014no doubt under the influence of statistical reasoning and public opinion polls.\u00a0 It is being assumed that the more people there are with different opinions to contribute, the greater \u2018truth\u2019 will emerge from the mixing of these opinions in the melting-pot.\u00a0 Truth is regarded as a kind of pudding, or brew, which you concoct from human opinions.\u00a0 But truth is more like a rock than a pudding\u2014a rock which you lay bare by scraping away the soil.\u00a0 And the soil is largely compounded of human prejudice and passion. \u00a0&#8212;\u00a0<\/span>Harry Blamires, 1963<sup>1<\/sup><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Over the last few months Christians in this country have had an uneasy feeling about the way governmental leaders have explained their morals and convictions by popular opinion polls.\u00a0 Because a Christian has a Bible which he believes to be inspired of God and to be an unchanging standard of truth and morality, he recognizes false \u201ctruths\u201d which are fabricated by popularity.\u00a0 It is essential to the Christian message that truth be seen as coming from a transcendent God and not something that is created by the majority of people.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Soren Kierkegaard once said, \u201cThe thing is to find a truth which is true for me, to find the idea for which I can live and die.\u201d<sup>2 <\/sup>If we were told up front that this statement came from Kierkegaard, we would immediately label it as existential and we would, of course, be right.\u00a0 Now consider the following statement, \u201cOur task is to grasp and articulate God\u2019s vision for our future and to facilitate the change necessary to create that future.\u201d<sup>3<\/sup> Though this statement is very close to Kierkegaard\u2019s\u00a0 existential statement, we embrace it because it comes from George Barna and has been proven by polling to be the key to success in ministry. In such ways, what was once considered unworthy of the Christian ministry has become its mantra.\u00a0 And the justification for the change is the power of public opinion.\u00a0 As one observer of modern culture has said, \u201cWhat is at stake here in the debate over postmodernism\u2019s vocabulary is ultimately our vision of the truth and moral order.\u201d<sup>4<\/sup><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Can anyone doubt that we have come to a day when Christian ministries are designed and guided by what the audience wants, and often in direct contradiction to our own knowledge of right and wrong?\u00a0 I have no bone to pick with Rick Warren\u2019s ministry, but in reading his book I can\u2019t help but notice this very thing.\u00a0 At one point he insists, \u201cFaithfulness is often defined in terms of attendance rather than service.\u201d<sup>6<\/sup> And yet when he is deep into the reasons for his successful ministry he says, \u201cAfter surveying who we were reaching, we made the strategic decision to stop singing hymns in our seeker services.\u00a0 Within a year of deciding what would be \u2018our sound\u2019, Saddleback exploded with growth.\u201d<sup>7<\/sup> And true to our postmodern way of thinking, the only thing that will be seen as wrong about this is that I have criticized it!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The culprit in this waning standard of truth is two-fold.\u00a0 First, we are selfish creatures who, since Eve and Cain, have found a way to make God\u2019s Word fit our own wants and desires (insert \u201cvision,\u201d \u201csuccess,\u201d \u201cgrowth\u201d etc.).\u00a0 Second, our wants and desires find their fulfillment in the approval of our fellow creatures.\u00a0 The approval of the crowd simply feeds the ego which in turn seeks for more approval.\u00a0 In this way truth is \u201cconstructed\u201d by popular opinion.\u00a0 The dangers, however, are these:\u00a0 what is truth today may not be truth tomorrow if the crowd\u2019s desire has changed; morality is replaced by \u201cvalues\u201d which are seen as belonging only to a specific group; and the most base displays of sinfulness become the norm, according to biblical warning (Rom 1:22-28).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The defenses for this method of structuring philosophy are numerous:\u00a0 none of us can follow the ideal completely and so it is judgmental to hold someone to part of it; the quantity of good accomplished by such structuring far outweighs the lack of quality used in obtaining it; and who, after all, can really be sure of what the Absolute Standard says?\u00a0 Isn\u2019t that all a matter of subjective interpretation anyway?<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">My concerns in approaching such a topic are these:\u00a0 1) If repentance is necessary for true salvation, what are we saying about that when we ask the sinner what he would like in order for him to come to God?\u00a0 Though I am not a Calvinist and am not recommending the old Puritan \u201cseeking\u201d period for the sinner, I do believe that a sinner has to completely give up his own desire, pride and self-worth in order to accept God\u2019s help.\u00a0 I fear we have created a way for sinners to have their religious cake and eat it too, by placing their interest first in themselves and secondly in Christianity.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">2) I fear that we are adding to the consumer mentality which already has engulfed our culture.\u00a0 Bruce Shelley wrote, \u201cThe Christian message and lifestyle, which in an earlier day could be more directly imposed, now must be \u2018marketed.\u2019 It must be \u2018sold\u2019 to a clientele that is no longer constrained to \u2018buy\u2019 . . . . Most churches and parachurch ministries are dominated by the logic of marketing agencies.\u201d<sup>8<\/sup> One of George Barna\u2019s books is titled, <em>A Step-By-Step Guide to Church Marketing<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">3) We are in danger of quickly taking the direction of our churches out of the hands of our elder saints and placing it squarely on the young.\u00a0 We are committing Rehoboam&#8217;s error.\u00a0 In a polling mentality, the squeaking door will get the oil while the well-oiled door will patiently endure.\u00a0 That doesn\u2019t mean it is right.\u00a0 It\u2019s just the way it is.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">John Wesley once said,\u00a0 \u201cI love Calvin a little, Luther more; the Moravians, Mr. Law and Mr. Whitfield far more than either . . . But I love truth more than all.\u201d<sup>9<\/sup> Perhaps we should hear Solomon\u2019s words to Rehoboam, \u201cBuy the truth and sell it not.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<address style=\"text-align: justify;\">Notes:<\/address>\n<address style=\"text-align: justify;\">1.
