{"id":1067,"date":"1998-10-27T02:41:21","date_gmt":"1998-10-27T02:41:21","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/aletheiabaptistministries.org\/Blog\/october-qare-we-too-sophisticatedq\/"},"modified":"2014-02-02T07:48:24","modified_gmt":"2014-02-02T07:48:24","slug":"october-qare-we-too-sophisticatedq","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/aletheiabaptistministries.org\/Blog\/october-qare-we-too-sophisticatedq\/","title":{"rendered":"Are We Too Sophisticated?"},"content":{"rendered":"<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong style=\"font-size: 16px; text-align: justify;\">Sophism<\/strong><span style=\"font-size: 16px; text-align: justify;\">:\u00a0 false argument, one intended to deceive.\u00a0 <\/span><strong style=\"font-size: 16px; text-align: justify;\">Sophist<\/strong><span style=\"font-size: 16px; text-align: justify;\">:\u00a0 captious or clever but fallacious reasoner.\u00a0 <\/span><strong style=\"font-size: 16px; text-align: justify;\">Sophistic<\/strong><span style=\"font-size: 16px; text-align: justify;\">:\u00a0 related to sophism.\u00a0 <\/span><strong style=\"font-size: 16px; text-align: justify;\">Sophisticate<\/strong><span style=\"font-size: 16px; text-align: justify;\">:\u00a0 sophisticated person, related to sophism.\u00a0 <\/span><strong style=\"font-size: 16px; text-align: justify;\">Sophisticated<\/strong><span style=\"font-size: 16px; text-align: justify;\">:\u00a0 worldly-wise, cultured, elegant, highly developed and complex.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>The Oxford Dictionary of Current English<\/em> (1993)<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">G.K. Chesterton wrote, \u201cMere light sophistry is the thing that I happen to despise most of all things.\u201d<sup>1<\/sup> But I think that today such sophistry has become \u201csophistication\u201d and it is the thing our generation covets the most.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">We see examples of this on a daily basis. Recently I heard the word \u201ciconographic\u201d (usually used in reference to art) used in reference to words and language that defend morality and truth.\u00a0 The speaker was arguing that words are merely icons (symbols, but not the reality) that have come to mean certain things, depending on how culture has affected them.\u00a0 For example, I may say \u201cadultery is sin\u201d but the word \u201cadultery\u201d is only a symbol that has been crafted to produce a certain connotation in my mind.\u00a0 It may or may not have anything to do with the actual act.\u00a0 In this way \u201cadultery\u201d is iconographic.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">These thinkers would insist that Puritanical Christians of generations past decided to attach a negative meaning to this activity by calling it adultery.\u00a0 But today\u2019s liberated thinkers are not bound by such moralizing.\u00a0 Remove the attached label, or icon, and all such cultural prohibitions are also removed.\u00a0 In such ways, today\u2019s cultural sophisticates have become verbal iconoclasts.\u00a0 Or, as William Bennett just wrote, \u201cThey have persuaded many that the sophisticated thing is to dismiss the scandalous as irrelevant.\u201d<sup>2<\/sup> They are effectively reaching into every area of sacred honor and belief and toppling every word that carries moral meaning.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">We children of the sixties laughed when the Beatles sang, \u201cI want to hold your hand\u201d because we knew that Mom and Dad thought that\u2019s all they meant.\u00a0 But now we are reaping what we sowed.\u00a0 We groan to hear the most powerful man in the world, himself a product of the sixties, say that adultery is not adultery.\u00a0 He has traded a sacred trust for a mess of iconograhic porridge and he has \u201cfound no place of repentance,\u201d even in tears.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">As we continue to move from a print-based society to a visual, image-based society, such pillaging of words will continue.\u00a0 The soil is ripe.\u00a0 Attention spans will continue to drop while the demand for entertainment in media will increase.\u00a0 Personal accountability in society and culture will wane while escape to virtual worlds will broaden beyond belief.\u00a0 Reasoning, based on commonly accepted word meanings in conversation, will grow scarce if not disappear altogether.\u00a0 The dictionary will become obsolete.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Technology, far from deepening our mental and verbal skills, has destroyed and replaced them with easier alternatives.\u00a0 Neil Postman wrote, \u201cTo every Old World belief, habit, or tradition, there was and still is a technological alternative.\u00a0 To prayer, the alternative is penicillin; to family roots, the alternative is mobility; to reading, the alternative is television; to restraint, the alternative is immediate gratification; to sin, the alternative is psychotherapy; to political ideology, the alternative is popular appeal established through scientific polling.\u201d<sup>3<\/sup><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">A specific irritant in this emerging new age will be the preacher, the heralder of \u201cthus saith the Lord,\u201d one who must insist that a written text carries specific meaning, including the word \u201csin.\u201d\u00a0 He has no right, being only a messenger of the King\u2019s words, to negotiate with the text.\u00a0 His is only to proclaim it.\u00a0 Of course, it will become difficult enough to relate specific truths from specific words to an illiterate society who has become too technologically sophisticated to listen.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The preacher will become contentious for Jude, the Lord\u2019s brother, said he would have to contend.\u00a0 He will need to define meaning and refuse multiple choice answers to eternal questions.\u00a0 He will judge between truth and error by an unchangeable standard, and thus commit society\u2019s greatest offense\u2014that of judging something to be wrong.\u00a0 He will be busily running behind the iconoclasts and propping the words up again, only to see them fall as soon as he walks away.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Lest we end our thinking here, on what could easily be defeatism, let me suggest the good news with the bad.\u00a0 The bad news is that the western civilization we have known for a few hundred years, a civilization greatly influenced by Christianity and theistic thinking, is being overrun by paganism.\u00a0 This paganism is bringing with it a whole new way of defining and coming to truth\u2014a way that leads unto death!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The good news is rather ironic.\u00a0 If our job as heralders of God\u2019s truth is to put ourselves in a biblical frame of mind with the biblical writers, then our world has now become much closer to theirs and our job is much easier.\u00a0 Their world was awash with pagan thinking about gods being known through nature, experience being the basis for truth, the natural world enmeshed with the supernatural world and therefore as changeable as the seasons, and (something we forget) sex being an integral link between physical experience and\u00a0 celestial significance.\u00a0 History had no significance to the pagan because meaning could only be secured at the moment.\u00a0 \u201cThe supreme norm is always the status quo.\u201d<sup>4<\/sup><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">There is apparent danger with the good news.\u00a0 We may grow to like the pagan world and begin to think too much like it rather than in a biblical way.\u00a0 Our gospel is based in history.\u00a0 Our Savior is a fact of history.\u00a0 Our message is a revealed truth given in propositional form that transcends centuries and cultures.\u00a0 And our task is now very much like those apostles who first delivered the gospel.\u00a0 We are bringing light to darkness and hope to despair.\u00a0 However sophisticated we become, whatever contextualizing we do, we now have the blessed opportunity to participate in \u201clike precious faith\u201d with them.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<address>Notes:<\/address>\n<address>1.
