{"id":1066,"date":"1998-11-27T02:40:02","date_gmt":"1998-11-27T02:40:02","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/aletheiabaptistministries.org\/Blog\/november-qchristianity-in-the-dockq\/"},"modified":"2014-02-02T07:33:09","modified_gmt":"2014-02-02T07:33:09","slug":"november-qchristianity-in-the-dockq","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/aletheiabaptistministries.org\/Blog\/november-qchristianity-in-the-dockq\/","title":{"rendered":"Christianity In The Dock"},"content":{"rendered":"<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; text-align: justify;\">Do you really believe the masses will be Christian again?\u00a0 Nonsense!\u00a0 Never again.\u00a0 That tale is finished.\u00a0 No one will listen to it again.\u00a0 But we can hasten matters.\u00a0 The parsons will dig their own graves.\u00a0 They will betray their God to us.\u00a0 They will betray anything for the sake of their miserable jobs and incomes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Adolf Hitler<sup>1<\/sup><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">It is not an unusual thing for societies to imagine that they can become judges of Christianity.\u00a0 Totalitarian systems can outlaw the Faith and free systems can ridicule it.\u00a0 Nietzsche called Christianity \u201cPlatonism for the people,\u201d<sup>2<\/sup> and Voltaire referred to Christianity as \u201cthe infamous thing.\u201d<sup>3<\/sup> But they are dead and Christianity is living.\u00a0 G.K. Chesterton said, \u201cChristianity even when watered down is hot enough to boil all modern society to rags.\u201d<sup>4<\/sup><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In the first three chapters of the book of Romans Paul makes the case for the necessity of the Christian message.\u00a0 Whether Pagan, Jew or Gentile, \u201call have sinned and come short of the glory of God.\u201d\u00a0 \u201cThere is none righteous, no, not one.\u201d\u00a0 It is interesting to find that the excuses people gave in his day are the same we hear today.\u00a0 The Roman world was a relatively free society (at least for its citizens) that gave the Apostles the ability to speak the gospel, organize Christian churches and evangelize.\u00a0 Opposition was strong from the Jewish community and eventually from Rome as well.\u00a0 When Paul wrote the great epistle to the Romans, common questions were arising from Jewish and Gentile minds as to the validity and worth of the Christian message.\u00a0 In 3:1-8, Paul anticipates three questions to which he gives answers that are still foundational for today.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The first question is . . .<\/p>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>\u201cIf Christianity is the only way to God, then you are saying there is no truth in any other religion<\/strong>.\u201d<\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">3:1 has it: <em>What advantage then hath the Jew? Or what profit is there of circumcision?\u00a0 \u201c<\/em>If Paul is preaching salvation by grace through faith, then the Jewish Law and religion is of no profit to anyone.\u201d\u00a0 But Paul answers (vs 2) that the Jews have a great advantage!\u00a0 They have the Old Testament Scriptures!\u00a0 They have the greatest light of the gospel outside of Christianity itself.\u00a0 They are not saved simply because they possess it but they are much better off with that knowledge than without it.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Our multicultural and diverse world today often accuses Christians of being hateful and narrow because we preach that Jesus is the only way to God.\u00a0 Well, that is true.\u00a0 He is the only way to God.\u00a0 But that doesn\u2019t mean that no other religion contains any truth about God.\u00a0\u00a0 Judaism contains much truth; Romanism contains a lot of truth; Mormonism contains some truth; Buddhism contains a little truth.\u00a0 Paul had already argued that a man should be thankful for whatever amount of truth he has, because God will hold him accountable for how he uses it.\u00a0 Ron Mayers writes, \u201cThere are elements of truth in most religions due to the universality of general revelation.\u201d\u00a0 But, \u201cChristianity is more than the best among many.\u00a0 <em>It is the only<\/em>.\u201d<sup>5<\/sup><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The fact that Christianity demands exclusivity ought to commend it to a seeking person.\u00a0 How could a religion-made-to-order satisfy our need for truth?\u00a0 Bruce Shelley writes, \u201cSo far as I know, Islam has no Mohammedology and Buddhism has no Buddhology.\u00a0 The debate in the history of Christianity is a monument to the uniqueness of the One Christians call the Son of God.\u201d<sup>6<\/sup><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The second question is . . .<\/p>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>If God\u2019s revelation doesn\u2019t bring those people to Christianity, hasn\u2019t God\u2019s revelation failed?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong> <\/strong>In 3:3 Paul puts it, <em>\u201cFor what if some did not believe? Shall their unbelief make the faith of God without effect?\u201d <\/em>\u201cMaybe the Christian plan has failed because it is obvious that not everyone is going to accept it.\u201d We hear the same today:\u00a0 \u201cIf God\u2019s plan is so great, why is there pain and suffering?\u00a0 Why do people die at all?\u00a0 Why would God even allow this thing you call sin to enter His creation?\u201d\u00a0 The most common retort against God has been that either He doesn\u2019t care that people are suffering (or will suffer in hell), or He is unable to do anything about it.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Paul answers the objection by saying, <em>\u201cGod forbid: yea, let God be true, but every man a liar.\u201d<\/em> The problem is not with God\u2019s message that has been revealed, but the problem is that man has a basic problem\u2014he will not face his own sinful situation!\u00a0 Chesterton\u2019s famous reply to this accusation was, \u201cThe Christian ideal has not been tried and found wanting.\u00a0 It has been found difficult;\u00a0 and left untried.\u201d<sup>7<\/sup><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The third question becomes a little more complex . . .<\/p>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>If man\u2019s sin highlights how great God\u2019s mercy is (since God must forgive sin), then isn\u2019t sin good and God is bad if He condemns us?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">3:5 has it, \u201c<em>But if our unrighteousness commend the righteousness of God, what shall we say?\u00a0 Is God unrighteous who taketh vengeance<\/em>?\u201d\u00a0 Paul, it seems, blushes even to write such a thought that he adds, \u201c(<em>I speak as a man<\/em>).\u201d\u00a0 Yet that is exactly where man in his sinful thoughts always ends up.\u00a0 Sin is not only excused because God has failed to sufficiently reach out to us, sin is good because it exalts love and forgiveness.\u00a0 The only bad part of sin can be the refusal to excuse it out of love and forgiveness.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Paul deals at length with the implications of this thought.\u00a0 Though the statement of such thinking may appear shocking, it is the root of much of the world\u2019s thinking even today.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>1.\u00a0 The problem of naturalism<\/strong>.\u00a0 Paul answers in vs 6, \u201c<em>God forbid: for then how shall God judge the world<\/em>?\u201d\u00a0 By that reasoning, Paul says, nothing in the world could be called sin or wrong, and it would be impossible for even God to judge the world\u2014but of course we know He will.\u00a0 If no action has a moral connotation that can be punished, then we are in a natural world, one in which there is no \u201cought\u201d and there probably is no God.\u00a0 William Bennett wrote, \u201cThe thought that God\u2019s grace, given to us through Christ\u2019s death at Golgotha, would justify licentiousness has long been considered contemptible by saints and scholars throughout the ages.\u00a0 And rightfully so.\u201d<sup>8<\/sup><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>2. The problem of nihilism<\/strong>.\u00a0 Paul again answers in vs 7, \u201c<em>For if the truth of God hath more abounded through my lie unto his glory; why yet am I also judged as a sinner<\/em>?\u201d\u00a0 If there is no moral right and wrong, then there is no meaning in this world.\u00a0 The terms \u201clie\u201d and \u201cGod\u201d and \u201csinner\u201d are no more relevant to anything than a dog\u2019s bark.\u00a0 They are all just sounds that we have learned to make but they carry no real meaning behind the sounds.\u00a0 Someone said consistent nihilism is an oxymoron.\u00a0 C.S. Lewis wrote, \u201cMost people, if they had really learned to look into their hearts, would know that they do want, and want acutely, something that cannot be had in this world.\u201d<sup>9<\/sup><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>3. The problem of hedonism<\/strong>.\u00a0 The final outcome of the sinner\u2019s outrageous statement is answered by Paul in vs 8, \u201c<em>And not rather, (as we be slanderously reported, and as some affirm that we say,) Let us do evil, that good may come?\u00a0 Whose damnation is just<\/em>.\u201d\u00a0 If there is no moral obligation in the world, and if there is no eternal purpose to which we should strive, the only thing that seems to be worthwhile is our own pleasure.\u00a0 This is what lost man has wanted all along, to give himself permission to do as he pleases.\u00a0 The Christian message (of real sin and real forgiveness) must be ignored if this goal is to be accomplished.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The world will always put the Christian message on trial.\u00a0 And the Christian message will continue to be the only key that opens the door to life\u2019s fulfillment.\u00a0 Pascal put it this way, \u201cThere are only three sorts of people: those who have found God and serve him; those who are busy seeking him and have not found him; those who live without either seeking or finding him.\u00a0 The first are reasonable and happy, the last are foolish and unhappy, those in the middle are unhappy and reasonable.\u201d<sup>10 <\/sup><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<address>Notes:<\/address>\n<address>1.
