{"id":1021,"date":"2003-05-26T16:01:52","date_gmt":"2003-05-26T16:01:52","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/aletheiabaptistministries.org\/Blog\/may-qwhen-disciples-are-above-their-masterq\/"},"modified":"2014-02-02T07:29:27","modified_gmt":"2014-02-02T07:29:27","slug":"may-qwhen-disciples-are-above-their-masterq","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/aletheiabaptistministries.org\/Blog\/may-qwhen-disciples-are-above-their-masterq\/","title":{"rendered":"When Disciples Are Above Their Master"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; text-align: justify;\">\u201cPaul&#8217;s word about being all things to all men and our Lord&#8217;s eating with publicans and sinners have been worked overtime to justify unwise sociability.\u201d<\/span><sup style=\"text-align: justify;\">1<\/sup><span style=\"font-size: 16px; text-align: justify;\"> How true!\u00a0 Anyone who is concerned at all about worldliness in the church has had to listen to the proposition that Jesus\u00a0 was accepted and loved by sinners and they were accepted without condemnation by Him.\u00a0 But what Havner\u00a0 feared would justify \u201cunwise sociability\u201d has now gone far beyond that to a more calculated carnality.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">This is a typical (postmodern) verbal bait and switch.\u00a0 We rightly receive the initial message that, as a sinner we come to Jesus for salvation: \u201cJust as I am without one plea but that thy blood was shed for me.\u201d\u00a0 We mean that the sinner cannot come to Jesus with his own merit for salvation.\u00a0 That is true.\u00a0 But we cannot jump from there to what cannot be true: namely, that Jesus accepts our sin.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">With a little reflection we can realize that the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">sinner<\/span> does not come to God with his sin but without it.\u00a0 If he could come with his sin, he would not need a Savior who washes it away!\u00a0 Praise God that we can come before Him justified in Christ!\u00a0 Also, we should realize that the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">believer<\/span>, though remaining in his flesh, does not remain in neutral concerning his flesh.\u00a0 He is either in forward or reverse.\u00a0 Either sin is controlling him and he is carnal and powerless before God (and then under chastening for sin), or he is growing in grace, mortifying sin in his life and is continually becoming conformed to the image of Christ.\u00a0 Either way, God does not accept our sin, and therefore does not \u201caccept us\u201d as we are.\u00a0 He always demands a conforming to His holy standard.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Matthew 10 is one of the most difficult chapters for the follower of Christ to read.\u00a0 Jesus said, <em>The disciple is not above his master, nor the servant above his lord.\u00a0 It is enough for the disciple that he be as his master, and the servant that he be as his lord.\u00a0 If they have called the master of the house Beelzebub, how much more shall they call them of his household? (10:24-25).<\/em> Jesus was asked to <em>depart <\/em>(9:34) from the coasts of the Gergesenes; He was\u00a0\u00a0 <em>laughed to scorn <\/em>(9:24) by the people in Capernaum and He <em>offended<\/em> (13:57) his own family in Nazareth.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The difficulty with this passage is that the follower of Jesus is called on to endure hardship for his faith.\u00a0 Spurgeon said, \u201cTrue fidelity can endure rough usage.\u201d<sup>2<\/sup> But many have convinced themselves that Jesus never endured rough usage and neither should we unless we are some kind of legalists who purposely antagonize people.\u00a0 If we can convince ourselves that Jesus accepted people without judging their spiritual condition, then we can do the same and can also shun any uncomfortable confrontation with them.\u00a0 But this is exactly what Jesus means in Matthew 10 for a disciple to be above his Master.<\/p>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\">Are we more savvy than Jesus?<\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Do we think we know better how to avoid criticism?\u00a0 They were calling Jesus <em>Beelzebub<\/em>, <em>the prince of the devils<\/em> (25, see also 12:24).\u00a0 Was Jesus here telling the disciples to avoid such criticisms at all costs?\u00a0 No!\u00a0 He was telling them to expect it!\u00a0 Hubert Brooke said, \u201cIt becomes a mere matter of honesty, that that which belongs to the Lord by right of purchase, should be yielded up to Him by the willing choice and deliberate surrender of the purchased possession.\u201d<sup>3<\/sup><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><em>It is enough<\/em>, Jesus explained, <em> for the disciple that he be as his master <\/em>(25).\u00a0 Why?\u00a0 Because the believer walks by faith, not by sight.\u00a0 He endures the ridicule here, in order to hear the \u201cwell done\u201d up there.\u00a0 <em>Fear them not therefore: for there is nothing covered, that shall not be revealed; and hid, that shall not be known <\/em>(26).\u00a0 Do we have that kind of faith?\u00a0 I think we fear the presence of gossip more than we fear the presence of God.\u00a0 Asaph wrote, <em>Thou makest us a strife unto our neighbors: and our enemies laugh among themselves.\u00a0 Turn us again, O God of hosts, and cause thy face to shine; and we shall be saved<\/em> (Psa 80:6-7).\u00a0 It is not the smile of their faces he wanted, but only the smile of the God of heaven.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\">Are we more wise than Jesus?<\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Do we think we know better how to avoid harm?\u00a0 Jesus continued, <em>And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell<\/em> (28).\u00a0 He followed that by speaking of God\u2019s care for a sparrow\u2019s fall, and His knowledge of the very hairs of our head.\u00a0 In our avoiding of persecutions, have we become better judges of life\u2019s circumstances than God who knows how many hairs are on our head?<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In the three and a half years that these disciples walked with Jesus, never did anyone lay a hand on them to harm them.\u00a0 Through the early chapter of Acts, they were thrown in jail but they were not beaten.\u00a0 Not until Acts 5, against the advice of Gamaliel, did the disciples ever have their bodies abused for their faith.\u00a0 And what was their reaction?\u00a0 Did they sue their assailants? Did they protest on the Sanhedrin steps?\u00a0 Did they boycott the fish gate?\u00a0 No!\u00a0 <em>They departed from the presence of the council, rejoicing that they were counted worthy to suffer shame for his name <\/em>(Acts 5:41).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The writer of Hebrews directed his readers to <em>consider him that endured such contradiction of sinners against himself, lest ye be wearied and faint in your minds <\/em>(Heb 12:3). Then he added, <em>Ye have not yet resisted unto blood, striving against sin <\/em>(4).\u00a0\u00a0 Wimps!\u00a0 How could they be so fearful in the presence of a great cloud of martyred witnesses?\u00a0 <em>Of whom the world was not worthy <\/em>(11:38).\u00a0 John Calvin wrote, \u201cLet men do their utmost, they cannot do worse than murder us!\u00a0 And will not the heavenly life compensate for this?\u201d<sup>4<\/sup> Wasn\u2019t this <em> the joy that was set before him<\/em> (Heb 12:2)?\u00a0 Are the servants above the Lord in this matter of those who can harm our bodies?<\/p>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\">Are we more peaceful than Jesus?<\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Do we think we know better how to avoid controversy?\u00a0 Today\u2019s evangelism mostly consists of how not to speak to people!\u00a0 That is, how to avoid any conversation that might invoke controversy.\u00a0 But in this context Jesus warned, <em>Whosoever therefore shall confess me before men, him will I confess also before my Father which is in heaven.\u00a0 But whosoever shall deny me before men, him will I also deny before my Father which is in heaven<\/em> (32-33).\u00a0 This is followed by stern language that Jesus came to send a sword, not peace; and that households would be torn apart due to a person\u2019s confession of Jesus.\u00a0 And, He warned, he that loves even family more than He is not worthy of Him.\u00a0 <em>And he that taketh not his cross, and followeth after me, is not worthy of me <\/em>(38).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Are we avoiding controversy that Jesus has designed, or are we truly being salt and light to our generation?\u00a0 Oswald Chambers wrote,\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u201cThen comes the glorious necessity of militant holiness. Beware of the teaching that allows you to sink back on your oars and drift; the Bible is full of pulsating, strenuous energy. From the moment a person is readjusted to God, then begins the running, being careful that &#8216;the sin which so easily ensnares us&#8217; (Hebrews 12:1) does not clog our feet.&#8221;<sup>5<\/sup><\/p>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\">Are we more valuable than Jesus?<\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Do we think we know better how to avoid death?\u00a0 We have either become too attached to this world or too afraid of death for we have totally turned the next verses on their head.\u00a0 <em>He that findeth his life shall lose it: and he that loseth his life for my sake shall find it <\/em>(39). Many today think this means that Christians find such a wonderful life on this earth that they \u201close their life\u201d for Christ\u2019s sake!\u00a0 And not only that, but when we \u201close our life\u201d for Christ\u2019s sake, we find the abundant life for which we have been looking.\u00a0 Evidently our lives are always more valuable than those of the apostles or of Christ Himself.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">But what did our Lord mean?\u00a0 He meant that if we are so afraid of the \u201csword\u201d (34), or of those of our own \u201chousehold\u201d (36), or of a \u201ccross\u201d (38), that we would rather choose to \u201cfind our life\u201d now, then we will \u201close it\u201d in eternity.\u00a0 But if we are willing to \u201close\u201d our life now for His sake and the gospel\u2019s, then we will \u201cfind it\u201d in eternity.\u00a0 In the parallel passage in 16:24-28, He added, <em>For what is a man profited, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? <\/em>(16:26).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In a more noble day, an older writer said of this passage, \u201cThey are best prepared for the life to come, that sit most loose to this present life.\u201d<sup>6<\/sup> J. Sidlow Baxter wrote, \u201cThe Christian belongs to what he is to become; not to what he has left behind.\u201d<sup>7<\/sup> That is why these words of Jesus are a call to the walk of faith!\u00a0 Otherwise, what right would one have to ask another to die, unless the end result is far greater in value than the sacrifice?<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">I am glad that the great majority of Christians do not have to be killed for their faith.\u00a0 But unless we would rather avoid denial than death, we will not convince any others of the truth we preach.<\/p>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\">And So . . . .<\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Are we striving to place ourselves above our Lord?\u00a0 Or is it enough for us that we endure as He did?\u00a0 The current infatuation with success and church growth is dictating the answer!\u00a0 They will not come unless they are happy with us, and they will not be happy with us unless we accept them as they are.\u00a0 The trade off is that we do not suffer their reproach, and they will bless our services with their presence.\u00a0 The deal that is struck places us in an exalted position among them\u2014above even where our Lord placed Himself.<\/p>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<address style=\"text-align: justify;\">Notes:<\/address>\n<address style=\"text-align: justify;\">1.
