{"id":7879,"date":"2007-09-30T01:10:00","date_gmt":"2007-09-30T01:10:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/aletheiabaptistministries.org\/Blog\/?post_type=eutychus-article&#038;p=7879"},"modified":"2019-11-30T01:12:31","modified_gmt":"2019-11-30T01:12:31","slug":"begging-the-question","status":"publish","type":"eutychus-article","link":"https:\/\/aletheiabaptistministries.org\/Blog\/eutychus-article\/begging-the-question\/","title":{"rendered":"Begging the Question"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">My vote for the best book of the 20<sup>th<\/sup> Century\nwill probably be Thomas Sewell\u2019s The Vision of the Anointed since among many\nother poignant perceptions is the excellent explanation of Begging the Question\nas a basis for argument. For those unfamiliar with the long-ago taught\nprinciples of argumentation, Begging the Question starts with a statement\nassumed to be truth that is not necessarily a truth, nor does the writer make\nany attempt to verify his statement as truth. He merely makes the statement,\nassumes it to be truth, and proceeds to build the rest of his arguments on that\nstatement. Sewell\u2019s book is written as an excellent summary of this erroneous\npractice by the liberal social consensus of our country. His premise is that\nthey make a statement, assume it to be true because they thought it up, said\nit, or both, and then&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; proceed to make every other \u201ctruth\u201d\ndependent upon that first premise. This \u201cvision\u201d as he calls it, has so pervaded\nthe social left that they cannot see their own error in beginning with a false\nassumption. Example: \u201cAmericans disapprove of the war.\u201d This generalization\nassumes that all Americans have given their disapproval.&nbsp; Did they ask me,\nor even a majority of Americans? No. Therefore, that premise is invalid and any\nargument to end the war based on that statement has no validity (and is invalid\nfor other reasons of argumentation). The average Gallup Poll (survey) questions\nfewer than 1000 of the nearly 500 million Americans. <sup>1<\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Teaching requires that we establish truth as verifiable,\nresearchable, and valid conclusions as reproducible.&nbsp; Today\u2019s Christian is\nwithout excuse in my estimation.&nbsp; Research and study avenues abound in our\nage and we have the tools for verifiable argument. Yet our literature and\nspeech is so glutted with fallacious reasoning and&nbsp; arguments built on\nassumed premises that&nbsp; it is no wonder the lost world questions us. One\ndoes not have to be a scholar to see through or understand a false premise,\nBegging the Question, or other weak arguments. These were commonly taught (I\nrefer to the&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Harvard Principles of\nArgumentation and Persuasion as one of the most common texts until about 1980)\nin most schools. Let us study to show ourselves approved so that we are not put\nto shame.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Remember: Truth is verifiable under any scrutiny. If you\nreally have the truth, any research, study, or questioning will only prove you\nright. If, however, the research or scrutiny calls your \u201ctruth\u201d into question,\nyou should bend over backwards to get to the truth.
