font-size: 1.8em; line-height: 1.5em;\">A look at Christian selfishness<\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Savonarola once wrote,\u00a0 \u201cIn\u00a0\u00a0 the primitive church the chalices were of wood and the prelates were of gold;\u00a0 to-day the prelates are of wood and the chalices are of gold.\u201d<sup>1<\/sup> Paul told the Corinthians that we are less than wood, we are clay (\u201costraka\u201d) vessels.\u00a0 \u201cClay vessels are cheap, utterly common, the least valued, used with small care, bound to break sooner or later.\u201d<sup>2<\/sup> Yet the sage was right, we desire the earthly rather than earthen.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">I should not presume to write on selfishness.\u00a0 This tap root of our sin nature is more deceitful than any of us could imagine or master.\u00a0 This is \u201cwhere passions have the privilege to work and never hear the sound of their own names.\u201d<sup>3<\/sup> One cannot tell a selfish man he is selfish, and every last one of us is selfish to the core.\u00a0 But when we are commanded by God to pay attention to something, we must give the best of our efforts and ask the Holy Spirit for help.\u00a0 It is because this trait of ours is so comely that we must give it more comeliness.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The church at Corinth was not unlike many churches throughout our history, nor its individuals unlike many of us today.\u00a0 They displayed their selfishness, however, in every way they could.\u00a0 Whether through their preference of showy gifts and flashy individuals, or their propensity for excluding the poor and overlooking the sinful, their self-centeredness manifested itself in almost every area of their Christian lives and ministries.\u00a0 Francois Fenelon wrote, \u201cThis is the decision of man, and it is the judgment of God, who would not have us so occupied with ourselves and thus, as it were, always arranging our features in a mirror.\u201d<sup>4<\/sup><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Paul told the Corinthians, rather, that, <em>we all, with open face beholding as in a glass the glory of the Lord, are changed into the same image from glory to glory, even as by the Spirit of the Lord (2 Cor 3:18).<\/em> If we look at the image of Christ in the mirror long enough, we will eventually be formed into that same image.\u00a0 But the surprise to our selfish nature is that Christ is not selfish but caring, not strong but weak, not defensive but defenseless, and that to be like Him we will be <em>always bearing about in the body the dying of the Lord Jesus, that the life also of Jesus might be made manifest in our body (4:10).<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">How is it that Paul had such power with God?\u00a0 As Dr. Harju used to say in class, he was a hook-nosed, runny-eyed, little Jew!\u00a0 How could he be so persuasive among the diverse world in which he ministered?\u00a0 Is it not because he knew that Jesus said, <em>And I, if I be lifted up from the earth, will draw all men unto me (Jn 12:32)?<\/em> Hadn\u2019t Paul realized, in the midst of his own thorns that God insists, <em>My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness (2 Cor 12:9)?<\/em> And didn\u2019t he know that <em>we have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the excellency of the power may be of God, and not of us (2 Cor 4:7)?<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">It is when the earthen vessels start to become earthly that we lose our power with God.\u00a0 Whereas \u201cearthen\u201d means <em> made of the earth; of baked clay,<\/em> \u201cearthly\u201d means <em>worldly, nonspiritual, sensual, carnal, corporeal, natural, temporal, mortal. <\/em>Of course, the reason we are \u201cearthen\u201d is to be broken, disposable, easily shattered.\u00a0 When this happens to the vessel, the Light within can shine through!\u00a0 The power is not in the vessel but in the Light!\u00a0 But the vessel often disagrees.\u00a0 As the old proverb goes, ham and eggs is a contribution to the chicken but a total sacrifice to the pig.\u00a0 But God will not have the eggs without the ham, and He will not give <em>the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God (4:4)<\/em> until the vessel agrees to break.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Haven\u2019t we all learned by experience and observation that in Christ\u2019s ministry we are too often in the business of avoiding breaking the vessel.\u00a0 Because our selfishness is so deceptive, however, we almost always feel we are making great sacrifices for God when, in fact, we are only protecting ourselves from being broken.\u00a0 Diogenes Allen wrote,<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Our existence is more real to us than the existence of anything else because the existence of everything else is evaluated in terms of its usefulness and attractiveness to our purposes.\u00a0 Everything is subordinate to our will.\u00a0 To do evil is to attempt to retain that perspective and relation to others.\u00a0 To refuse to do evil is to recognize that we are not at the center and that all things are not to be judged with ourselves at the center.<sup>5<\/sup><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Self-preservation and self-aggrandizement are both part of our selfish nature.\u00a0 Yet by these we protect our vessel and keep it from being broken.\u00a0 In the \u201cthorn in the flesh\u201d passage, Paul concludes his lesson on strength out of weakness by writing, <em>Therefore I take pleasure in infirmities, in reproaches, in necessities, in persecutions, in distresses for Christ&#8217;s sake: for when I am weak, then am I strong (2 Cor 12:10).<\/em> We would do well to examine ourselves in the light of these five \u201cvessel breakers.\u201d<\/p>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\">Infirmities:\u00a0 Our human weaknesses<\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">C.S. Lewis wrote, \u201cIn coming to understand anything we are rejecting the facts as they are for us in favor of the facts as they are.\u00a0 The primary impulse of each is to maintain and aggrandize himself.\u201d<sup>6<\/sup> Few of us see a difficulty very clearly when we are in the midst of the difficulty.\u00a0 For all of our talk about having experienced it, we usually are much more objective, and therefore more correct, before the trial.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Our human weaknesses drive us to cover up for ourselves.\u00a0 It is embarrassing for others to see us as we really are.\u00a0 Therefore we let our infirmity defeat us by not using it to bring glory to Christ.\u00a0 William Wilberforce once wrote,\u00a0 \u201cOne may almost say that the main object and chief concern of real Christianity is to root out our natural selfishness and to correct the false standard it would impose upon us.\u201d<sup>7<\/sup> This is a basic human weakness.<\/p>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\">Reproaches:\u00a0 Our open vulnerabilities<\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Why is it that we don\u2019t like reproaches?\u00a0 If we are right; if we told someone the truth who needs it very badly; why do we withdraw because of that person\u2019s reaction?\u00a0 Did we stop giving our children medicine because they fought against us?\u00a0 There is no one so vulnerable to reproach as the one pouring in the oil and the wine.\u00a0 So we often avoid it!\u00a0 Tozer wrote, \u201cThe new cross does not slay the sinner, it redirects him.\u00a0 It gears him into a cleaner and jollier way of living and saves his self-respect.\u201d<sup>8<\/sup> And it saves our self-respect as well.\u00a0 But evangelism is going to cost someone his self-respect; either the saint or the sinner.\u00a0 The sinner, if he is going to find repentance; the saint, if he is going to show it to him.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\">Necessities:\u00a0 Our unmet needs<\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Whether real needs or perceived needs, we do not like to be left with unmet needs.\u00a0 Did you ever see a child throw himself on the floor, kicking and screaming, because he didn\u2019t get what he wanted?\u00a0 Isn\u2019t that because he was not able to see the whole picture the way his father could see it?\u00a0 His father knew what he needed and when.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Very few believers could ever live as Paul lived.\u00a0 What he calls mere necessities would be abject poverty and ruin to most of us.\u00a0 We would throw ourselves on the prayer closet floor and scream until God changed things.\u00a0 Yet we go far beyond necessities to what Ravi Zacharias called \u201cnon-profit envy:\u00a0 a man with ten sheep looking at his neighbor\u2019s hundred sheep would wish that ninety of his neighbor\u2019s sheep would die.\u201d<sup>9<\/sup> Our \u201cneeds\u201d are too often a comparison of our status with others\u2019.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\">Persecutions:\u00a0 Our enemies\u2019 victories<\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Here we must remember that our Lord\u2019s cross was a victory to the world, the flesh, and the Devil.\u00a0 Yet it became the power of God for the salvation of the world.\u00a0 Paul prayed, <em>That I may know him, and the power of his resurrection, and the fellowship of his sufferings, being made conformable unto his death (Phi. 3:10).<\/em> Too often, persecutions from the world are conceded as failures to the Christians rather than victories for the cross of Christ.\u00a0 Heaven forbid that we might be despised by the world!\u00a0 I am not advocating ignorant provocation, but rather the attitude of Christian history, as Calvin said :\u00a0 \u201cLet men do their utmost, they cannot do worse than murder us!\u00a0 And will not the heavenly life compensate for this?\u201d<sup>10<\/sup><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\">Distresses:\u00a0 Our difficult circumstances<\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">It is not speaking well for our generation that the distresses of life cause us to fail the Lord.\u00a0 The divorce rate is as high today among believers as among non-believers (though I doubt the definitions).\u00a0 Church drop-out rates fluctuate with the economy and the stock market.\u00a0 It is true, today\u2019s society is fast-paced, pressure-packed and full of over-night calamities.\u00a0 In the midst of these, can we let the peace of God rule in our hearts?\u00a0 Can we lose everything in this world and still praise Him?\u00a0 We know we should, but we\u2019re not sure if we will!\u00a0 Only our selfish desires will keep us from it.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Paul wrote, <em>In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you (1 Thes 5:18).<\/em> When our selfishness asks out of the race, we need to trust in the fact that God knows what He\u2019s doing.\u00a0 I believe history is God\u2019s will and we must accept the fact that God has done right and done best.\u00a0 Anything less would be earthly rather than earthen.<\/p>\n<address style=\"text-align: justify;\">Notes:<\/address>\n<address style=\"text-align: justify;\">1.\u00a0 Savonarola, \u201cOn the degeneration of the church,\u201d\u00a0 Mayo Hazeltine, Ed., <em>Orations: Homer To Mckinley<\/em>, Vol 3 (New York: Collier and Son, 1902) 1281.<\/address>\n<address style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u00a0<\/address>\n<address style=\"text-align: justify;\">2.
