{"id":1042,"date":"2001-11-27T00:12:16","date_gmt":"2001-11-27T00:12:16","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/aletheiabaptistministries.org\/Blog\/november-qconsidering-the-new-king-james-versionq\/"},"modified":"2014-02-02T07:36:07","modified_gmt":"2014-02-02T07:36:07","slug":"november-qconsidering-the-new-king-james-versionq","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/aletheiabaptistministries.org\/Blog\/november-qconsidering-the-new-king-james-versionq\/","title":{"rendered":"Considering The New King James Version"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px; text-align: justify;\">Because I agree with Calvin when he says, \u201cSacred word does not deserve to be accused of novelty,\u201d<\/span><sup style=\"text-align: justify;\">1<\/sup><span style=\"font-size: 16px; text-align: justify;\"> and also with Thomas \u00e0 Kempis when he says, \u201cTruth, not eloquence, is to be sought for in Holy Scriptures,\u201d<\/span><sup style=\"text-align: justify;\">2<\/sup><span style=\"font-size: 16px; text-align: justify;\"> I offer this conclusion to my comparison of these two Bible versions.\u00a0 It will be an annoyance to some and be welcomed by others.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The translators of the King James Version wrote in their preface, \u201cWe never thought from the beginning that we should need to make a new translation, nor yet to make of a bad one a good one; but to make a good one better, or out of many good ones one principal good one, not justly to be excepted against; that hath been our endeavour, that our mark\u201d (\u00b6 16).\u00a0 Truly, their process of updating the available translations was very much like today\u2019s process of updating the Old KJV to the New KJV.\u00a0 They even saw their work as a no-win proposition when it came to eventual criticism:\u00a0 \u201cBut we weary the unlearned, who need not know so much; and trouble the learned, who know it already\u201d (\u00b6 14).\u00a0 But the criticism was the lesser of two evils, for the greater evil would be not to bring the Word into greater light:\u00a0 \u201cSo, lest the Church be driven to the like exigent [in need of aid], it is necessary to have translations in a readiness.\u00a0 Translation it is that openeth the window, to let in the light; that breaketh the shell, that we may eat the kernel; that putteth aside the curtain, that we may look into the most holy place; that removeth the cover of the well, that we may come by the water\u201d (\u00b6 6).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">This will not be an exercise in textual criticism.\u00a0 Obviously, the textual tradition of these two versions is the same, and arguments for and against that tradition is not my objective.\u00a0 Nor will this be an apologetic for one version over the other but rather a Bible reader\u2019s comparison of what I believe to be the advantages and disadvantages of both. (If, of course, one adheres to a different textual tradition, and I do not rule out such\u00a0 adherences, he then sees an <em>a priori <\/em>disadvantage).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">I would also beg the pardon of my friends who see no need (indeed, even a real danger) in doing this at all.\u00a0 As even the translators addressed, I cannot win with either the harshest critics nor with the most zealous advocates.\u00a0 I\u2019m sure my conclusions will land somewhere between you both.\u00a0 I love the King James Version and have no desire to disparage it in any way.\u00a0 That is not to say I am unaware of its difficulties in use.\u00a0 But I have been reading the New KJV this year (the OT once and the NT about a dozen times) and have learned to appreciate it in many ways, while at the same time balking at some of its newer expressions.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Over the last several months, I have merely kept a paper in the back of my NKJV with one side labeled \u201cReasons I would use the NKJV\u201d and the other side labeled \u201cReasons I would use the old KJV.\u201d\u00a0 I added various references to the entries each time I read.\u00a0 I will give seven from both lists.<\/p>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\">Reasons why I would use the New King James Version<\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong> 1. <\/strong>I am glad that the NKJV has no \u201cghosts\u201d and \u201cdevils\u201d and I would not miss reading such words in public as \u201casses\u201d and \u201cbastards.\u201d\u00a0 There is no different Greek word for \u201cGhost\u201d than for \u201cSpirit\u201d and there is only one \u201cdevil\u201d but many \u201cdemons.\u201d\u00a0 Non-offensive words are updated as well, such as \u201ccheribims,\u201d \u201cdisannulled,\u201d \u201cconversation,\u201d etc. to make the meaning more quickly understood.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>2.<\/strong> The layout of the text is much easier to follow.\u00a0 In poetical books, the verse is set aside for easier eye contact.\u00a0 Quotations of the OT in the NT are set aside as well and become easily recognizable as such.\u00a0 It is not a paragraph Bible, but these changes in appearance make it easier to follow.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>3.<\/strong> Difficult readings are made clearer by changing a few words.\u00a0 Instead of \u201cthat recompense of their error which was meet\u201d (KJV) you have \u201cthe penalty of their error which was due\u201d (NKJV) in Rom 1:27.\u00a0 Instead of \u201conly he who now letteth will let until . . .\u201d (KJV), you have \u201conly He who now restrains will do so until . . .\u201d (NKJV) in 2 Thes 2:7.\u00a0 These kinds of examples are numerous.\u00a0 The translators put it, \u201cvariety of translations is profitable for the finding out of the sense of the Scriptures\u201d (\u00b6 17).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>4.<\/strong> Many old words in the KJV do need updating if the reader is to immediately grasp the meaning.\u00a0 The NKJV gives you \u201cclothing\u201d for \u201craiment;\u201d \u201cuseful\u201d for \u201cmeet;\u201d \u201cbasic principles\u201d for \u201crudiments;\u201d \u201cdesire\u201d and \u201cpassion\u201d for \u201cconcupiscence;\u201d \u201cprecede\u201d for \u201cprevent;\u201d \u201cmoney\u201d for \u201clucre;\u201d \u201cannul\u201d for \u201cdisannul;\u201d and \u201cteacher\u201d for \u201cschoolmaster.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>5.<\/strong> Specific wordings become more pointed and therefore more powerful and persuasive.\u00a0 In 2 Tim 1:12, the KJV has \u201cwhich I have committed unto him against that day\u201d but the NKJV has \u201cwhat I have committed to Him until that Day.\u201d\u00a0 In 1 John 5:13, the KJV repeats the first part of the verse and concludes, \u201cthat ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God.\u201d\u00a0 The NKJV has it, \u201cthat you may know that you have eternal life, and that you may <em>continue <\/em>to believe in the name of the Son of God.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>6.<\/strong> Most editions of the KJV have not capitalized the personal pronouns for the God-head.\u00a0 The NKJV always has \u201cHe\u201d when referring to any member of the God-head.\u00a0 In addition, in Rom 8:16, where the KJV has \u201cthe Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit\u201d the NKJV has \u201cThe spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit.\u201d\u00a0 The NKJV is consistent in using the masculine pronoun in English though the Greek can express it differently.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>7.<\/strong> Sometimes the NKJV is simply more accurate in giving the sense.\u00a0 In Prov 19:27, the KJV has \u201cCease, my son, to hear the instruction that causeth to err from the words of knowledge.\u201d\u00a0 The NKJV has, \u201cCease listening to instruction, my son, and you will stray from the words of knowledge.\u201d\u00a0 In 1 Tim 6:5 the KJV has, \u201csupposing that gain is godliness\u201d where the NKJV has \u201cwho suppose that godliness is a means of gain.\u201d\u00a0 But by far the most important are the changes in statements referring to Christ\u2019s deity!\u00a0 In Rom 9:5 (see also Tit 2:13, 2 Pet 1:1) the KJV has \u201cChrist came, who is over all, God blessed for ever\u201d but the NKJV has \u201cChrist came, who is over all, the eternally blessed God.\u201d\u00a0 Quite a difference!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">When someone in my church just cannot understand the older language of the KJV, I urge them to use the NKJV, especially when following me or a teacher who is using the old KJV.\u00a0 A newer language Bible will change the entire verse or sentence, where the NKJV will simply replace a single word or two and the reader will follow more easily.\u00a0 Also, of course, the \u201cthees and thous\u201d and all the older endings are removed.\u00a0 Less experienced Bible readers find this a welcomed change.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Note of caution:\u00a0 I must be sure a change to the KJV is for clarity and not (necessarily) for accommodation to lesser biblical interests.\u00a0 I still think it is not wrong for people to struggle some in their Bible education!\u00a0 It did not hurt most of us (rather it helped greatly).\u00a0 However, as the translators wrote, \u201cNow what can be more available thereto, than to deliver God\u2019s book unto God\u2019s people in a tongue which they understand?\u201d (\u00b6 12).<\/p>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\">Reasons why I would use the old King James Version<\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>1. <\/strong>One of the most compelling reasons for remaining with an English text is the familiarity for reference and recall.\u00a0 How many of us will ever quote John 3:16 in anything other than the old King James English?\u00a0 When reading the older version I am so familiar with the wording that meditation and cross-referencing become second nature.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>2.<\/strong> We may not have noticed, but much of English literature, hymnology as well as well-known commentaries include great amounts of quotation from and allusion to the King James Version.\u00a0 When we sing \u201cHere I raise mine Ebenezer\u2014Hither by Thy help I\u2019m come,\u201d it just wouldn\u2019t be the same with \u201cThus far the LORD has helped us.\u201d\u00a0 The fact that we don\u2019t sing hymns much anymore, nor actually read the commentaries or classics, and therefore have lost much affinity with the KJV wording, is not a compliment to our modern age.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>3.<\/strong> One of the most noticeable differences in the NKJV from the old, is the dropping of the emphatic sentence order.\u00a0 This is one place where I think the \u201cstyle\u201d of the older version is much better!\u00a0 The texts lose a lot when we read otherwise familiar phrasing in very plain English word order.\u00a0 For example:\u00a0 \u201cfor the Son of Man is coming at an hour you do not expect\u201d (Lk 12:40); \u201ceven so God will bring with Him those who sleep in Jesus\u201d (1 Thes 4:14); and \u201cbecause He who is in you is greater than he who is in the world\u201d (1 Jn 4:4).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>4.<\/strong> In addition to the sentence order is the loss of dignity in language that the older version retains.\u00a0 I would rather have, \u201cand so shall we ever be with the Lord\u201d (1 Thes 4:17), than \u201cand thus we shall always be with the Lord.\u201d\u00a0 I would rather have \u201cthen sudden destruction cometh upon them, as travail upon a woman with child\u201d (1 Thes 5:3), than \u201cas labor pains upon a pregnant woman.\u201d\u00a0 Sometimes the meaning gained does not warrant the dignity lost.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>5.<\/strong> I also miss a few of the old dynamic equivalents of the older version!\u00a0 Somehow \u201ccertainly not!\u201d does not bring the same effect as \u201cGod forbid!\u201d\u00a0 Although I know that \u201cGod\u201d is not in the text, and we probably can\u2019t picture an old Englishman or Puritan giving his ghastly expression, I like them anyway.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>6.<\/strong> For my part, what I would call \u201cfaddish\u201d changes add nothing to the reading.\u00a0 Why have \u201cdo not be drunk with wine, in which is dissipation?\u201d\u00a0 Why not \u201cexcess?\u201d\u00a0 I don\u2019t get any more out of \u201cas no launderer on earth\u201d (Mk 9:3), than I do out of \u201cfuller on earth.\u201d\u00a0 I\u2019m not sure about \u201cdrinking parties\u201d (1 Pet 4:3) instead of \u201cbanquetings\u201d except that today\u2019s school kids have no vocabulary to compare.\u00a0 \u201cWho came in by stealth\u201d (Gal 2:4) may give an odd image today rather than \u201cwho came in privily.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>7.<\/strong> Technical terms such as \u201cten minas\u201d (Lk 19:13) are no improvement over \u201cten pounds.\u201d\u00a0 Nor is \u201ca denarius a day\u201d (Mt 20:2) over \u201ca penny a day.\u201d\u00a0 Does a transliteration of an old term help our understanding over a translation of the term?\u00a0 It may spare some misunderstanding but doesn\u2019t add much to the reading.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Note of caution:\u00a0 When my love for the older language surfaces, and my disappointment with the new, I must be sure I am not sacrificing the benefit to my hearers (in preaching) for the sake of my own preference.\u00a0 The translators wrote, \u201cIf we will be the sons of the truth, we must consider what it speaketh, and trample upon our own credit, yea, and upon other men\u2019s too, if either be any way a hinderance to it\u201d (\u00b6 15).<\/p>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\">And So . . .<\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">I hope you have not faulted me in too many places for simply giving the observations of a Bible reader.\u00a0 I see many of my own inconsistencies! (but I remember R.W. Emerson\u2019s retort:\u00a0 \u201cFoolish consistency, the hobgoblin of little minds, adored by statesmen, philosophers and divines\u201d<sup>3<\/sup>).\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 A more important element in this subject is what D.L. Moody expressed, \u201cA man filled with the Spirit will know how to use \u2018the sword of the Spirit.\u2019\u00a0 If a man is not filled with the Spirit, he will never know how to use the Book.\u00a0 We are told that this is the sword of the Spirit; and what is an army good for that does not know how to use its weapons?\u201d<sup>4<\/sup> For the sword of the Spirit IS the Word of God!<\/p>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<address style=\"text-align: justify;\">Notes:<\/address>\n<address style=\"text-align: justify;\">1.
