{"id":1037,"date":"2002-04-26T23:57:25","date_gmt":"2002-04-26T23:57:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/aletheiabaptistministries.org\/Blog\/april-qwhat-in-the-world-are-we-doingq\/"},"modified":"2014-01-21T08:49:38","modified_gmt":"2014-01-21T08:49:38","slug":"april-qwhat-in-the-world-are-we-doingq","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/aletheiabaptistministries.org\/Blog\/april-qwhat-in-the-world-are-we-doingq\/","title":{"rendered":"What In The World Are We Doing?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; text-align: justify;\">The Belgic Confession (1561) pictures God\u2019s creation as, \u201ca most beautiful book in which all created things, whether great or small, are as letters showing the invisible things of God to us.\u201d<\/span><sup style=\"text-align: justify;\">1<\/sup><span style=\"font-size: 16px; text-align: justify;\"> When the angels in heaven sing before God they say, <\/span><em style=\"font-size: 16px; text-align: justify;\">Thou art worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and honour and power: for thou hast created all things, and for thy pleasure they are and were created <\/em><span style=\"font-size: 16px; text-align: justify;\"> (Rev 4:11).\u00a0 The Psalmist wrote, <\/span><em style=\"font-size: 16px; text-align: justify;\">The earth is the LORD&#8217;S, and the fulness thereof; the world, and they that dwell therein<\/em><span style=\"font-size: 16px; text-align: justify;\"> (Psa 24:1).<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">But the Bible does not always speak of the earth or the world in such glowing terms.\u00a0 The <em>world <\/em>did not know Christ (John 1:10) and Satan has become <em>the god of this world<\/em> (2 Cor 4:4).\u00a0 We are to <em>set [our] affection on things above, not on things on the earth<\/em> (Col 3:2).\u00a0 At one point we are exhorted to <em>Praise the LORD from the earth<\/em> (Psa 148:7) and at another we are not to <em>mind earthly things<\/em> (Phil 3:19).\u00a0 What are we to make of this?\u00a0 Surely the Bible is not to be taken as the Koran with its doctrine of abrogation, where contradictions are settled by the later statement taking precedent over (abrogating) the earlier.<sup>2<\/sup><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The solution is well-known but not always remembered by Christians.\u00a0 We may say that God made the <em>world <\/em>if we mean by that, the globe upon which we live.\u00a0 It is better to say that God created the <em>earth <\/em>because that word almost always describes the globe.\u00a0 Of the 287 times the word <em>world <\/em>appears in the Bible, only 46 are in the Old Testament.\u00a0 Most of the subject of the <em>world <\/em>is dealt with through the Christian warfare of the New Testament.\u00a0 By contrast, of the 987 times the word <em>earth <\/em> appears in the Bible, 795 are in the Old Testament and only 192 in the New Testament.\u00a0 Most of the subject of God\u2019s creation and care of the <em>earth <\/em> is dealt with through the picturesque language of the Old Testament.\u00a0 We are to appreciate and admire the <em>earth <\/em>upon which we live, but we are, as Christians, to handle the <em>world <\/em>differently.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In the New Testament, our word <em>earth <\/em>is translated from the word \u201cg?\u201d (gh).\u00a0 We use the prefix <em>geo <\/em>to form over 50 English words including geography, geology and geode.\u00a0 However, our word <em> world <\/em>is translated from the word \u201ccosmos\u201d (kosmos) and forms words such as cosmetic, cosmopolitan and cosmology.\u00a0 Satan is the god of the \u201ccosmos\u201d but not of the \u201cgeo.\u201d\u00a0 The \u201ccosmos\u201d may hate the Christian (John 15:18) but the \u201cgeo\u201d surely could not.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Though the Bible can say that God created the world (see Acts 17:24), the great majority of times \u201ccosmos\u201d refers to a \u201ccomplex orderly self-inclusive system\u201d (Webster); \u201cthe thought of order or system . . . Under the sway of Satan . . . As something hostile to God\u201d (Baker\u2019s Dictionary of Theology).\u00a0 This, then, presents the challenge of living in the \u201cgeo\u201d but not being of the \u201ccosmos.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">I would give the following conclusions regarding the <em>world <\/em>and the Christian in this age of grace.<\/p>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\">Satan largely controls the world<\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">This is not to impugn God\u2019s sovereignty.\u00a0 Even the evil of this world does not catch God by surprise.\u00a0 But God has obviously allowed Satan to have temporary control of the world to such a degree that he is <em>the god of this world<\/em> (2 Cor 4:4); <em>the prince of this world <\/em>(John 14:30); <em>the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience <\/em>(Eph 2:2).\u00a0 Since <em>the whole world lieth in wickedness <\/em>(1 John 5:20), Satan is free to walk about <em>as a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour <\/em>(1 Pet 5:8).\u00a0 Satan was even so bold as to offer the kingdoms of this <em>world <\/em>to the Creator of the <em>earth <\/em>(Matt 4:8-9).\u00a0 Such is his delegated authority.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">If there are two things that we underestimate in this world, they are the depths of our own depravity, and the power and craftiness of Satan.\u00a0 We are told in the twelfth chapter of Revelation, that the dragon (Satan) continues to pursue the woman (Israel) to this very hour!\u00a0 We know that shortly he will rule the entire globe through a man of sin (Rev 13) and a false prophet.\u00a0 \u201cEnemy occupied territory\u2014that is what this world is.\u00a0 Christianity is the story of how the rightful King has landed, you might say landed in disguise, and is calling us all to take part in a great campaign of sabotage.\u201d<sup>3<\/sup><\/p>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong> The lost live in the world as practical atheists<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Satan, the god of this world, wants to be <em>like the most High <\/em>(Isa 14:14) yet he would rather men live as if there were no God.\u00a0 When men live contrary to God\u2019s moral law they are atheists, if even for a moment.\u00a0 Their conscience is unable, by the insistent reminder of a Lawgiver, to overcome the selfish pull to what is <em>in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life<\/em> (1 John 2:16).\u00a0 For that moment, the lost forget God and block His Word from their minds and hearts.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Man, under the power and control of Satan, has his <em> conversation in the world<\/em> (2 Cor 1:12).\u00a0 He is unhappy because <em>the sorrow of the world worketh death<\/em> (2 Cor 7:10).\u00a0 He is <em>in bondage under the elements of the world <\/em>(Gal 4:3).\u00a0 He has no defense against <em>the rulers of the darkness of this world <\/em>(Eph 6:12).\u00a0 He cannot escape <em>the corruption that is in the world through lust <\/em>(2 Pet 1:4) nor <em>the pollutions of the world <\/em>(2:20)\u00a0 while under Satan\u2019s dominion.\u00a0 Martyn Lloyd-Jones said of this man, \u201cHe does not want to believe in his mind what something within him keeps asserting.\u201d<sup>4<\/sup><\/p>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong> Culture has become the world\u2019s religion<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">True to its name, culture has become this generation\u2019s cult.\u00a0 We must agree with T.S. Eliot when he defined culture as \u201cbeing essentially, the incarnation (so to speak) of the religion of a people.\u201d<sup>5<\/sup> Belief really can\u2019t be separated from works.\u00a0 And every man\u2019s culture is the outworking of his inward belief system.\u00a0 When I was in Russia (the old Soviet Union) in 1992, there were no church buildings, but there were \u201ccultural centers\u201d in every town and city.\u00a0 In an atheistic, anti-God society, culture is praised as the natural self-expression of man without God.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">L.S. Chafer, in his book on Satan wrote, \u201cThe Satanic ideal of this age is, then, an improved social order, a moral and cultured people who are devout worshippers of himself, though for the present they may imagine that they are worshipping Jehovah through their empty religious forms and ceremonies, while they are really in a state of God-dishonoring unbelief, and all their thoughts are energized by Satan alone.\u201d<sup>6<\/sup><\/p>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong> Christians are commanded not to love the world<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The apostle John, who used the word <em>cosmos <\/em> more<em> <\/em>than any other Bible writer, said, <em>love not the world, neither the things in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him <\/em>(1 John 2:15).\u00a0 In like manner, James, the brother of Jesus, wrote, <em>Ye adulterers and adulteresses, know ye not that the friendship of the world is enmity with God?\u00a0 Whosoever therefore will be a friend of the world is the enemy of God <\/em>(Jas 4:4).\u00a0 The more a man <em>looks into the perfect law of liberty, and continueth therein, he being not a forgetful hearer <\/em>(Jas 1:25), the more he sees the depth of his own depravity in the light of God\u2019s holiness.\u00a0 When he sees that, he will not love the <em>world <\/em>he sees within.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Even the things that seem neutral in this world will not be grasped too tightly when we see Christ more clearly.\u00a0 \u201cThe moment we care for anything deeply, the world (that is, all the other miscellaneous interests) becomes our enemy.\u201d<sup>7<\/sup> Francis Schaeffer wrote, \u201cDo we understand that even right entertainment can be the wrong integration point and be just as wicked and just as destructive as wrong entertainment if I put it in the place of God?\u201d<sup>8<\/sup> The difficulty for our generation seems to be to love Christ enough that we stop loving the world!<\/p>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong> Christians are called to leave the world<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Peter writes that we have been <em>called out of darkness into his marvelous light<\/em> (1 Pet 2:9) and that through Christ, God has <em>called us to glory and virtue <\/em>(2 Pet 1:4).\u00a0 It\u2019s not just that we are called (verb) <em>saints<\/em>, but that we are <em>called <\/em>(adjective) saints!\u00a0 You are to <em>walk worthy of God, who hath called you unto his kingdom and glory<\/em> (1 Thes 2:12). \u00a0<em>Whereunto he called you by our gospel, to the obtaining of the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ <\/em>(2 Thes 2:14).\u00a0 We are on our way to heaven!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Houses in the country used to have back doors!\u00a0 I can remember both my grandmother and later my mother standing at the back door of an old house and calling us to dinner.\u00a0 When that call came, all else took second place.\u00a0 All of us quit what we were doing and ran toward the voice that was calling us.\u00a0 God is calling us out of this world!\u00a0 It may be a good distance yet before we see Him and enter the door, but neither the cares nor the labor of this world should hinder us from our path.\u00a0 \u201cThose who want Heaven most have served Earth best.\u00a0 Those who love Man less than God do most for Man.\u201d<sup>9<\/sup><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong> And so . . .<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Spurgeon asked, \u201cDoes the world satisfy thee:\u00a0 Then thou hast thy reward and thy portion in this life; make much of it, for thou shalt know no other joy.\u201d<sup>10<\/sup> For those whom the world satisfies, Jesus said,<em> they have their reward, <\/em>but for those whom it does not He says, <em>Thy Father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly<\/em> (Matt 6:2-5).<\/p>\n<address style=\"text-align: justify;\">Notes:<\/address>\n<address style=\"text-align: justify;\">1.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Quoted by Alister McGrath, <em>I Believe: Exploring the Apostle\u2019s Creed<\/em> (Downer\u2019s Grove: IVP, 1997 31.<\/address>\n<address style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u00a0<\/address>\n<address style=\"text-align: justify;\">2.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 See Ravi Zacharias, <em> Light in the Shadow of Jihad <\/em>(Sisters, OR: Multnomah, 2002) 40.<\/address>\n<address style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u00a0<\/address>\n<address style=\"text-align: justify;\">3.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 3.
