{"id":8332,"date":"1997-11-02T21:47:13","date_gmt":"1997-11-02T21:47:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/aletheiabaptistministries.org\/Blog\/?post_type=catbird-seat&#038;p=8332"},"modified":"2020-04-23T21:48:10","modified_gmt":"2020-04-23T21:48:10","slug":"short-stories","status":"publish","type":"catbird-seat","link":"http:\/\/aletheiabaptistministries.org\/Blog\/catbird-seat\/short-stories\/","title":{"rendered":"Short Stories"},"content":{"rendered":"\r\n\r\nIs your young reader ready for classic writers but not quite ready for the BIG novels?\u00a0 I have found success in the introduction of classic writers through short stories.\u00a0 The following examples are a few select stories which happen to be my favorites simply because students enjoy them.\u00a0 This obviously makes the transition to novels by the same author much more likely.\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nAlmost every student must read Geoffrey Chaucer but most are only introduced to the Prologue of the <em>Canterbury Tales<\/em>.\u00a0 The actual tales themselves are rarely read; what a shame!\u00a0 Try these two:\u00a0 &#8220;The Black Rocks of Brittany&#8221; and &#8220;The Nun&#8217;s Priest&#8217;s Tale.&#8221;\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nNathaniel Hawthorne is one of my favorite writers.\u00a0 <em>The Scarlet Letter<\/em> is certainly a classic, but Hawthorne&#8217;s short stories are just as intriguing.\u00a0 Among my students&#8217; favorites are &#8220;The Birthmark,&#8221; &#8220;Dr. Heidegger&#8217;s Experiment,&#8221; and &#8220;The Great Stone Face.&#8221;\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nEvery reader should read at least one novel of Charles Dickens.\u00a0 I recommend <em>A Tale of Two Cities<\/em> and <em>Great Expectations.<\/em> Start with his short stories:\u00a0 &#8220;A Christmas Carol&#8221; and &#8220;A School of Facts.&#8221;\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nOther authors I have had success introducing through short stories are Robert Louis Stevenson, &#8220;Markheim&#8221;; Stephen Crane, &#8220;The Open Boat&#8221;; Leo Tolstoy, &#8220;How Much Land Does a Man Need?&#8221;&#8216;; Pearl S. Buck, &#8220;The Frill&#8221;; Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, &#8220;The Red-Headed League.&#8221;\r\n\r\n","protected":false},"author":4,"featured_media":0,"template":"","categories":[132],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-8332","catbird-seat","type-catbird-seat","status-publish","hentry","category-from-the-catbird-seat"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v26.8 -
