{"id":8319,"date":"2001-04-30T19:36:24","date_gmt":"2001-04-30T19:36:24","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/aletheiabaptistministries.org\/Blog\/?post_type=catbird-seat&p=8319"},"modified":"2020-04-23T19:37:11","modified_gmt":"2020-04-23T19:37:11","slug":"homework","status":"publish","type":"catbird-seat","link":"http:\/\/aletheiabaptistministries.org\/Blog\/catbird-seat\/homework\/","title":{"rendered":"Homework"},"content":{"rendered":"\r\n\r\nThe next step in evaluating your child’s learning situation is to assess his homework.\u00a0 Is it “busy work”?\u00a0 Some teachers assign their subject rather than teach it.\u00a0 As with most any learned area, practice and repetition are proven methods.\u00a0 However, there must be procedural learning — i.e., a step by step process followed in the practice (homework) exercises which is designed to reinforce the teaching in the classroom.\u00a0 For example, if I teach students the simple first steps of how to diagram subjects and verbs and then assign sentences to diagram which deal with too many other frustrating parts, or nothing I taught, I accomplish confusion.\u00a0 The homework practice should have simple subject and verb sentences with only the variations I taught in class: one word subjects, or compound subjects joined by conjunctions.\u00a0 My philosophy is to assign several examples as homework, then check those the next day.\u00a0 If the students grasp the concepts, there is no need to assign multitudes of exercises just to fill a time requirement.\u00a0 Unfortunately, in schools where 30 or more students share one class and teacher, adjusting to everyone’s learning curve leaves some students bored while others catch up.\u00a0 When you oversee your child’s homework, compare it with the text lessons it is designed to reinforce.\u00a0 If you can’t match homework to lessons, ask the teacher for the purpose behind the assignment.\u00a0 It may be very legitimate; it may not.\u00a0 In my next column:\u00a0 What can a parent do to learn what is the right curriculum?\r\n\r\n","protected":false},"author":4,"featured_media":0,"template":"","categories":[132],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-8319","catbird-seat","type-catbird-seat","status-publish","hentry","category-from-the-catbird-seat"],"yoast_head":"\nHomework -
