{"id":8316,"date":"2001-07-20T19:33:25","date_gmt":"2001-07-20T19:33:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/aletheiabaptistministries.org\/Blog\/?post_type=catbird-seat&#038;p=8316"},"modified":"2021-03-25T04:52:31","modified_gmt":"2021-03-25T04:52:31","slug":"assessing-your-childs-education","status":"publish","type":"catbird-seat","link":"http:\/\/aletheiabaptistministries.org\/Blog\/catbird-seat\/assessing-your-childs-education\/","title":{"rendered":"Assessing Your Child&#8217;s Education"},"content":{"rendered":"\r\n\r\nDo you know what questions you should be asking your child&#8217;s teacher?\u00a0 What is the level of subject proficiency that should be gained in each grade?\u00a0 Are you able to ask specific questions regarding the core knowledge in each of the primary subjects for your child&#8217;s grade?\u00a0 Are you aware of professional requirements your school, its teachers, and its administration should meet?\u00a0 Can you confidently select additional resource\/learning materials for your child, such as enriching outside reading?\u00a0 Will you know if your child has successfully completed each grade&#8217;s necessary academics?\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nIn finishing my review of Bennett&#8217;s <em>The Educated Child<\/em>, I want to stress how <em>much<\/em> material is in this resource!\u00a0 You can deal with each of the above questions using this book.\u00a0 You will also learn how to assess your child&#8217;s progress yourself.\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nAs an added benefit, Bennett tackles the subjects most schools avoid defining for parents: whole language teaching (a proven failure) instead of phonics; authentic assessment (a red flag for inflated grades), and meaningless terms for grades and research and &#8220;experts&#8221; who back this illegitimacy (see p. 497).\u00a0 Bennett exposes the socialistic approach of supposed educators like Kohl (see pp. 162-163), and those who would have our schools make all children equal, especially in achievement, which sounds good but caps better students so that they may not excel (making others &#8216;feel inferior&#8217;) and provides little specialized help for those who are underachievers.\u00a0 &#8220;It&#8217;s like lowering the basketball hoop to make it <em>look<\/em> like everyone&#8217;s a great player,&#8221;\u00a0 Bennett says regarding lowered standards (p. 494).\r\n\r\n","protected":false},"author":4,"featured_media":0,"template":"","categories":[132],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-8316","catbird-seat","type-catbird-seat","status-publish","hentry","category-from-the-catbird-seat"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v26.8 -
